"Something In The Way She Moves" Cover

Unread post by GreedylilPig » Thu Oct 20, 2005 2:58 pm

Still working on my fingerpicking quite a bit. Hopefully it's progressed some amount since posting Blackbird a few weeks back. I feel I still have a ways to go, but do feel I'm improving. I still can't believe it took me 15 years to put down the pick. Anyway, this is one of my favorite James Taylor songs. Some of you might know that he released two versions. One is much slower than the other. I tried to find a middle ground, taking a little from each. Suggestions and comments are appreciated.

you still have a bit of work w/ the finger picking. but it's getting smoother. do you record guitar and vocals at the same time? There's really nothing to be upset about in this one though, your picking is slowly getting very fluid. The things you need to work on only come w/ practice. you're definetly on your way.

i'm not even going to comment on your voice cause you already know what i'm going to say.

but i do want to say that your recording quality, especially lately, has been phenominal. you should create your own thread on how you mix and what effects you use cause they're amazing.

Very nice job on this Brian. I noticed a couple points where your voice was a tiny bit weak. It just sounded like you ran out of breath almost. Very good job overall. Very similar sounding to Taylor.
I'm also interested in how you achieve that quality, it really is superb.

You voice and quality of recording is excellent Brian. A little critique on your fingerpicking, sometimes it sounded like your timing was a little off, but usually only on the low root notes that you're picking. Just practice having that thumb land right on the downbeat, and be confident with your timing.

But seriously, I was being pretty picky and really looking for something to critique. This was a very well done cover.

Okay, had a chance to do this today:

This is my 4-track. I bought it years ago, it wasn't that expensive then (maybe $100 or so). They're probably much cheaper now. It's a Yamaha MT-50, very easy to work with.

I bought a 1/4" inch to 1/8" adapter so I could send the recording to my computer.

My microphone is a E/V N/D267. I bought it several years ago before I started playing gigs. It was about $125 then and again, probably much cheaper now.

Image

The guitar I use the most to record has the following pickup. I am not sure what the specific model Fishman pickup it is:

Image

I use Sony Acid Pro 4.0 to record. It's about a $400 program. I really like it.

Basic screen shot. Sorry for the horrible jpeg quality.

Image

In terms of effects, I usually use two, reverb and smooth/enhance.

Image

First is a little bit of reverb. There's many different modes to choose from. My favorites are "warm space" and "rich hall." I usually set the reverb between -35 and -30 db, near the minimum amount. I'm careful with it because I think too much reverb is really, really annoying.

Image

And last, I enhance the track a little, around level 3.
