he's a great violinist. now im not sure if he could hang w/ orchestra or classical stuff (no idea, maybe) but he really is good and his pieces add a lot to the music. BUT, the concert i went to, he was out of tune...A LOT, and that seems to be the general statements about his stuff live. plus he put out that terrible solo album. so id say he's definetly good, id just say that he needs maybe to try harder live, maybe they're all getting tired of touring. i don't konw, jus a thoughtcheckii wrote:people have generally stated that he isn't a good violinist/fiddler, but to my untrained ear it seems like he can write great shit with the rest of the members. I mean, i'd rather have someone that isn't as good but can make the group as a whole sound better than to have the world's greatest violinist...
There is one thing about boyd . . .
im pretty sure it is...but its not like guitar, i mean it doesn't have frets, you can be off if your finger is just slightly off, if you bow isn't moving the right way(i think). i mean there are plenty of ways to be off. but if you listen to like red rocks and ls, i mean, he used to be awesome live. he CAN do it, i just think he either doesn't know he's sucking, or he's just nto trying anymore.checkii wrote:how hard is it to stay in tune?![]()
then again, i'venever tuned a violin, but I assume its just as easy as a guitar
if you ever get ahold of the 7/11/01 show from raliegh nc, check out PIG. its TERRIBLE!

regardless of how easy or hard it is to play a violin in tune, i knew 16 year olds in high school that could play entire symphonies without missing a note. i assume that it is EXACTLY like guitar in the respect that all it takes is practice, just like everything else.
boyd does make the band sound excellent in the studio, and he tears it up live when he is in tune, but man, he is not a good song writer. i couldn't even make it through his album once...and i tried. my boyfriend actually appologized for buying it for me, it was that bad....
but still, when he is in dmb, and in tune, i like boyd a lot. nancies and billies to name a few, would not be the same without boyd...

"Forget about what you are escaping from," he said, quoting an old maxim of Kornblum's. "Reserve your anxiety for what you are escaping to."

another thing you guys are missing is that even if his violin is not in perfect tuning, it's an intonation instrument, he can move his finger up just a touch to maintain the proper pitch he's going for...and most violinists do a fine job of tuning on the spot while playing...it's not that...he just sucks at violin. he's about as far from a pro as they come...he doesn't even hold the bow right according to all the violinists I've talked to...
