[UPDATED VERSION!!] #41: 12-string, 6-string, Bass, & Vo

Unread post by Roastbeef » Sun Sep 21, 2003 11:31 am

Hello all - I did this tune a few months back and really did it no justice. So tonight I decided to put this together. I did all the parts - 12-string, 6-string, bass and vocals:

Lemme know what you think! Comments on the music, singing, and mix are welcome...

bass was a little heavy at the beginning, but i'm glad it got toned down a little more for the rest of the song. the music, otherwise was great, though there were a few mix-ups. the one i remember was right in the middle, after "tomorrow leads the way." seems like you added something in there and it didn't sound very good at all.

as for the vocals, you have a unique one to say the least. ;) there were a lot of rough spots where you could have smoothed it out a little more, but i think it comes with practicing.

i loved the outro a lot, though going into it was a little rough. otherwise, it sounded great. you put a lot of your own style into it, and i liked it a lot. i'll probably listen to it again because you had some great stuff going on in there and could've extended it out even more.

kind of a sudden ending, would have preferred that each part go out until you had just the main rhythm guitar playing the ending, but that's just personal preference. anyway, great job, i enjoyed it a lot, dude.

Sounds good, At times it seems a little stiff, but youre gonna have that if youre multitracking everything. All the playing is great, singing is good, and a good mix.

Listening as I type:

The bass really dominates the intro, what might be an idea worth trying is let the two guitars go through the first four chords and then adding in the bass. (Edit: okay.. as it turns out it's that my stereo is set to bass boost, but I don't really seem to notice it except for your songs. :D Set to normal, it sounds nice and I like it.)
I really don't like the pulsing that you're doing with the 12 string during the verses. It's not doing something interesting enough to justify it's volume level during the verses. Chorus sounds good. Like the jam at the end quite a bit. Ending is long for some reason as pretty much everything is stopped at 5:10, but the mp3 doesn't end until 5:21 (I get this in CEP if I don't adjust the tracks so they just barely fit in the editing window). As for vocals.. well, we can't all sound like Miguel and it's a tough song to sing, but it's certainly not cringe-worthy.

bass is as already said before too dominant in the intro, but good work though
the guitar is awesome, man. the quality is high and you played really good. I love the solo guitar part in the end of the song.

The only thing I might criticize are the vocals. Try to sing kinda more naturally and don't concentrate that much on every word. But man you hit the high notes very well, what hardly nobody can do.

What's up all? Thanks for the great suggestions! I redid parts of this incorporating many of them. I totally reworked the vocals and I think they're slightly better. Miguel emailed me with some suggestions and tips (and when that dude offers vocals advice, you better sit up and listen, right? ;) ). Anyway, he focused on me trying to smooth out the vocals and specifically pointed out a few things whacky I was doing. It was a big help. Thanks Miguel!

I remixed the intro by having parts come in one at a time as well as adding a little fill. I also toned down the 12 string track as well as the bass. I added a few other fills and reworked the solo a bit. Anyway, here it is - same file name:

After listening to this again today I'm not that proud of those vocals. That's what I get for trying to sing after a few beers... Sounded good to me last night, but today I noticed I missed a lot of notes and was forcing some of the parts. Ughhh. :?
