saying 'if you need more than four strings to sound good you should go back to the basics' is ignorant. although i don't care for extended range basses, some of those guys could play circles around all of us. they do'nt need them to sound good, they use them to sound better or fill a niche in bass playing. you can't tap Tiger Rag on a four string bass.

i completely agree. those people dont need those extra strings to sound good. id put a bill dickens in that category (if you guys havent seen/heard him, check him out... http://www.billthebuddhadickens.com/ )i like tictacs wrote:saying 'if you need more than four strings to sound good you should go back to the basics' is ignorant. although i don't care for extended range basses, some of those guys could play circles around all of us. they do'nt need them to sound good, they use them to sound better or fill a niche in bass playing. you can't tap Tiger Rag on a four string bass.
i was saying that if you (you in general) need extra strings to sound good, then in my opinion, you should go back to four and sound good there first. to me, thats still where i am, and id bet most of us are (4/5 range id say is the same).
i guess its not really a great expression of what i think, but i really just dont like when someone pulls out a 6 string bass and can barely even use the middle 4. and as gsr said, i personally dont like anything more than 5. but some guys need those extra strings for what theyre playing and thats fine.
