Theory question about 'Satellite' and '34'

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Theory question about 'Satellite' and '34'

Unread post by Matty Boom » Wed Sep 17, 2003 10:21 am

So can someone explain the theory behind the pattern Dave uses in 'Satellite' and '#34' whatever other songs he uses. I'm talking about the first part, where he goes down one string and down two frets, then again. Can someone just tell me what's going on there so I can think about messing around with it sometime? Pretty please.
B+P by offer only...thank you

its a technique calles "stacked fifths". each note he goes up exactly three and a half steps (or 7 frets, or down one string and over two frets), its a pretty common pattern and it sounds really cool

that answer your question?

exactly right fatjack. it kinda stacks 2 power chords on top of eachother. really it is simply a sus2 chord. we see dsus2's all the time. the perfect 5th is one of the most natural sounding intervals to the human ear. so stacking 2 on top of eachother gives it s jumpy moving feeling.

and yeah it is really really common to see that stacked fifths pattern. the police used it at least 3or4 times on every record they ever put out. and the allman brothers experimented with this type of thing. Hendrix used them too. they really are everywhere.

grock,
I see you're from Chicago. Where abouts? I go to school on the Southside.
