gibson sg special faded

Unread post by seth_southerland » Wed Sep 21, 2005 1:09 pm

i'm looking into getting one of these, i played one of the epiphone normal sg's and liked it so i figure that a gibson one would only be better. and i really love the worn brown mahogany one.

anybody have one of these?

i looked at these a lot and i never got it but i could never think of a negative reason not to get it except the faded part. it adds uniquness and all that jazz, but it doesn't hold up as well if you accidentally ding it, which you will. but it's a great price on a pretty good guitar. i think i read somewhere that the pickups weren't ass good as the regular sg but i can't be certain of that, i might be making that up.

it has the same pickups as the regular sg
i'm not too worried about the dings, cuz all guitars get dinged up after a while anyway, so it'll just add character when it does, like they say

I don't really like how they're weighted, or the shape of the neck. That's really my only problem with the SG and that may just be me. To make sure just play the hell out of one for like an hour before you buy it.

If I were you I would get a Les Paul Special over the Sg faded.......

It's the same price, has a real finish, not the faded kind, and has the chrome humbucker covers. It's a more classy guitar IMO.

Those are the same humbuckers they put on the $3,000 Les Paul Supreme's.......

yea but the les paul and the sg are two completely differnet guitars. you're goign to need to hear the sound man. sg's are crunchy and les pauls are all about tone.

Isn't that LP flat top though? I'm sure it wouldn't make much of a difference, but it would take away some of the tone.

Yea its a flat top, but just the absense of a maple top isn't going to make enough difference to hear it. The body is still solid mahogany, and the top of a carved les paul is really pretty thin and is used more because it's beauty than its impact on tone. A flat top would probably be more fun to play over an extended period of time because it is lighter. If you have played a real les paul for an hour standing then you know what I mean.....

ES-175, PRS Custom 24, or PRS Singlecut (if you can find one).

Les Paul's are not bad for clean, depending on the amp, but if you want the cleanest humbuckers you ought to get a jazz semi-hollow guitar. (Like a gibson ES series or something similar)
