So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Making a topic return for your enjoyment - "Strumming&a

Unread post by bakemm » Tue Sep 16, 2003 1:47 am

Right now I am working on the chorus for So Much To Say. I am having some serious issues recognizing a strumming pattern. I dont have the ear to detect ups and downs, and right now I am playing:

D DUD DU

It sounds like poo, and I don't like it.

I know it has been suggested numerous times to just follow along with the music, but that was the best I could do after many attempts.

Remember, I have only been playing for a month and a half, so some direction would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I am having the same problem with Long Black Veil, except there I am playing:

D(bass) DU UD

Thank you.

maybe i play it wrong, but i don't use upstrokes on smts except during the chorus, then i just play whatever is natural to me.

and as for the verse of long black veil, the only upstroke i play is on the part where you put your pinky down on the 11th fret of the d string. hope that helps...probably not though :(

I meant... actually, I even said, that the chorus is the part I'm struggling with.

haha. me no like to read. sorry. i do like dunt dunt dunt dunt dodododadunt so like a few downs for the first beats and then some downs and ups for the last beats for each chord. down and up tabbing doesn't ever make much sense to me cuz it never conveys the inflections and stuff so sorry if this is no help.

Here's a little audio clip for you. The only advice I can give is keep playing it, you won't perfect it for a while. You have to truly feel the muting and rythym before you can master that chorus...as well as any other Dave Matthews song. Hopefully this clip will give you a feel of the rythym..

Heres what I play man: DDUDU DDUDU DDU for each chord and I pick my fretting hand up three times to do mutes on each chord also. I think The Man of The Hour played it pretty much the same way I do so listen to his recording or a solo/D&T show to really get it down.

jsgksu - Thank you for your help, that should give me something to work on. It already does sound a little better except for the fact that I can't physically strum that many times that quickly. Does it help to be on some sort of illegal drugs to strum faster?

Anyone got some suggestions for Long Black Veil? Thanks

i meant...no i actually said, play it natural during the chorus. you guys that get so wrapped up in what dave is doing forget that its music. its music and it has a rhythm. you don't need to hit a down stroke just cause dave does it. play it how it feels and sounds right.
