just a couple questions
just a couple questions
I am a newer dmb fan, so if ull excuse me of a lack of knowledge that would be great. But I would just like to post my first thread, asking how much input each member of the band has when the song is credited to all the band members on the actual music, so if anyone knew anything about that, at all, that would be great. I would also like to ask, does dave have musical theory knowledge? I have been studying music for a while and it definetly seems like it too me the guy knows his stuff or atleast the other great musicians of the band have more knowledge help em out, but ya never know, u dont have to be a great musician to write great songs, but u obviously atleast have to know something.
peace & thanks,

i know the answer to the first question: Yes. Definately Yes. They all contribute and you can even tell in the music itself. Everyone has their own part so to say. I think when they come up with songs it's sort of like everyone puts their own experience and talent into it to come up with a song. It's not like it's just Dave or a singular person being like this is how the music will be.

I think it depends on what era your talking about. Pre-Stand Up Dave did the main song writing. He would come up with the ideas (with the exception of a few songs) and the band would fill in around it. Ever since then its been kind of a grab bag as to how they come up with songs. Any member now pretty much just tosses an idea out there and the rest of the band fills in around it, which I think is bad for the band. Dave is the best song writer of the 5 by far and I think taking the writing process away from him can only hurt the band as a whole.

don't you think that the era should be called pre-Everyday instead??
hosting the oscars is like winning the heisman trophy. no matter how you do in the ballgame, or whatever, they can't take it away from you. and even if you kill your wife and an ex-waiter, they still have a hard time taking it away from you

No because Dave wrote all the songs with Ballard for Everyday. The rest of the band was left out of the process completely.ballmeblazer wrote:Nitro1515 wrote:I think it depends on what era your talking about. Pre-Stand Up Dave did the main song writing.

I've always maintained that Dave is very, very good at playing fox regarding his guitar playing skills.
Honestly, I really believe that Tim Reynolds showed Dave a lot of things that Dave still uses today. Must be nice to know a cat like that huh?

He's the one that gave dave the courage to get up on stage back in the days of his bartending, wasn't he? My impression was Dave was too intimidated by musicians there to play his stuff and then Tim encouraged him to get up there.c_tietze wrote:I've always maintained that Dave is very, very good at playing fox regarding his guitar playing skills.

Tim was sort of the foundation for what DMB would eventually build itself on, if you really think about it. What if Dave never went up there and played his songs on guitar at Miller's?
Things could be different

After watching a lot of d+t i think timmy probably did show dave a "few" things. Not to change the subject or anything.c_tietze wrote:Honestly, I really believe that Tim Reynolds showed Dave a lot of things that Dave still uses today. Must be nice to know a cat like that huh?
I'm pretty sure dave doesn't know any theory, i've heard dave say "this is an Am, cause timmy said so." If tim is pointing out basic chord names i don't think dave focus' too much on theory.

No, no. He said "This song is in B minor cause Timmy said so," refering to the key, not the chord. I can assure you that Dave knows what an Am chord is, though he may have a bit more trouble identifying the key of a song. Or maybe he knew and was just being goofy. He's pretty well known for being a goofball.
My point is, you can't NOT pick something up playing music for as long as he has. I'm sure Dave knows plenty of theory, whether or not he could tell you in words.
