How long have been singing? .
About 10 years in the shower, and about a month with a guitar. Never taken any sort of choir or singing lessons. It was just last week that I first heard my voice in a genuine attempt to sing, and I was really grossed out.

About playing scales and humming along--- I don't mind practicing this at all, but really, I don't know if I'm doing it correctly or not, I don't know if my voice is on target with the notes. Any suggestions there?

Thanks guys for the gut/chest suggestion, I tried that out last night and I thought it really helped out... However, I did find that I couldn't sing very high when singing that way, and I always felt out of breath....Suggestions in that area?

Thanks to everyone for your help.

Hey man I would suggest just taking a few voice lessons. Your teacher will give you things to practice on that will help you out. I was never that great at singing and I read a few books and sing my heart out every chance I get. I think that singing in the car has helped me out alot. I am not that great by any stretch but I am alot better than when I started. It takes alot of work but singing is just like anything else you can learn and get better at it.

OH also I read in a book about singing that you should sing from your diaphragm. She said it should feel like you are basically taking a dump just try and not let one go. Does any one remember in Story Tellers how Dave said that he just recently found out that he looks like he is taking a Steamer when he sings. That is cause he sings from his diaphragm. The other thing is to relax and get into the song you are singing.

That is my 2 cents!

ANYWAY the point of my post is this. is having a good ear generic? cuz my dad's ear is frickin awesome, he can listen to basically any song on guitar and play it. (then again hes been playin for 30 years)

i disagree
Well I agree with him, I think anyone can sing...unless they've screwed their vocals chords up..
Some people will just need to put a bit more effort into it..

Bakemm, i think you should go get some vocal lessons. It's probably something simple that you're missing out on. You just got work on that ear, keep recording yourself and dont get disheartened if you dont sound great at first.
Everyone sucks at first..

yeah!

and don't try to change the voice that comes out at first, whatever it is. it'll always be the most natural, and the most pleasant sounding!

heh. been reading up on voice, and though it's been said, i have to reiterate- don't imitate anyone else at all- that's not helping your voice any, and the only thing it's developing is your style, not the voice itself, plus sometimes it won't be in your range and you're going to be straining your voice, which is bad because practicing that way will only get you in the habit of doing it wrong. i'll see if i can get you a copy of some sites to help ya out.
