What is it about seeing a song played that makes it better?

Unread post by charliemike » Fri Aug 19, 2005 8:09 pm

After the dreamgirl vid was posted I watched the "So Damn Lucky" video of Dave and Trey in Africa. I've listened to "Some Devil" dozens of times and really liked that album.

But it wasn't until I saw Dave playing it, bringing so much emotion through his expressions that I realized how amazing this song is to me. I mean, I was moved by the melody and really just blown away. It was a pleasant surprise to say the least.

It was the same way with the Central Park DVD. I had been listening to Dave and Tim at Luther College a ton up til I bought the CP DVD last year and after watching it I had a completely different appreciation for some of the songs like Granny, for example.

So what is it about that? I think videos are horseshit but what is it about watching a performance that does that? Can we not get a complete connection with a song until we see it performed?

I think this is why I'd pay $1000 to sit front row at a D&T concert ... I could just sit and watch them play with no distractions from stimulus overload and really let the music touch my "soul" if you will.

To see them live is a whole another experience. That's why they are so great!! I hate it when I hear a cd from an artist then see them live and they blow on stage. With DMB I feel like I enter another world. They fined tuned their performance and worked so hard!!

Dave speak is well worth the price of admission. I've only seen one D&T show, back in 98 or 99, and all I can say is PHENOMENAL!

Lots of times when i hear a new song for any artist i'll think it's alright, then i'll see that song played on like a dvd or something and i'll be thinking "this song is badass!" then i'm super happy that i have a version to listen to when i can't watch the dvd.
