A Fusion of Tunes

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

A Fusion of Tunes

Unread post by Ranting Thespian » Thu Sep 11, 2003 3:45 am

Hmmm, I have been thinking about this.

first, start with 3 songs

#40
Cry Freedom
#36

Now, let's hack the songs up, and here are a few parts

Code: Select all

#40 verse
e--------------------
B---1----1----1----1-
G---0----0----0----0-
D---2----x----2----2-
A---3----2----0----0-
E-------------1----3-

Cry Freedom verse
e-------------------
B-------------------
G--6----7----4----6-
D--4----4----2----6-
A--x----x----x----4-
E--7----5----5------

#36 main part
e------------------------
B------------------------
G-----10-9------9--7-----
D---------------------10-
A--8---------------------
E------------8-----------

Now, let's alter them a little

Code: Select all

e--------------------
B---1---------1----1-
G---0---------0----0-
D---2---------2----2-
A-------------0----0- cut out the second chord, and get rid of the 3 on G
E-------------1----3-

e-------------------
B-------------------
G--5----6----3----5- move the chords down a half step
D--3----3----1----5-
A--x----x----x----3-
E--6----4----4------

e------------------------
B------------------------
G--------9------9--------
D------------------------ get rid of some notes
A--8---------------------
E------------8-----------

hmm, I think we should alter them a little more

Code: Select all

e--------------------
B---1--0h1----1----1-
G---0----0----0----0-
D---2----2----2----2- repeat the first chord but with a hammer on
A-------------0----0-
E-------------1----3-

e------------------------
B------------------------
G--5----6----3----5----5-
D--3----3----1----5----5- add another chord to the end
A--x----x----x----3------
E--6----4----4---------3-

e------------------------
B------------------------
G--------9------9--------
D-------10-----10-------- add the 10th on the D
A--8---------------------
E------------8-----------

Hey, how about we rearrange the tabs

Code: Select all

e------------------------
B------------------------
G--------9------9--------
D-------10-----10--------
A--8---------------------
E------------8-----------

e--------------------
B---1--0h1----1----1-
G---0----0----0----0-
D---2----2----2----2-
A-------------0----0-
E-------------1----3-

e------------------------
B------------------------
G--5----6----3----5----5-
D--3----3----1----5----5-
A--x----x----x----3------
E--6----4----4---------3-

now, let's add a few more chords

Code: Select all

e------------------ -----
B------------------ -----
G--------9------9-- -----
D-------10-----10-- -10--
A--8--------------- --8-- add one of Dave's odd chords
E------------8----- --6--

e-------------------- -3-
B---1--0h1----1----1- -0-
G---0----0----0----0- -0-
D---2----2----2----2- -0-
A-------------0----0- -2-
E-------------1----3- -3- add a G chord

e------------------------
B------------------------
G--5----6----3----5----5-
D--3----3----1----5----5-
A--x----x----x----3------ let's leave this one alone
E--6----4----4---------3-

Hmmm, I think we could change the Dave chord to a picking style

Code: Select all

e------------------ ------------------------
B------------------ ------------------------
G--------9------9-- ------------------------
D-------10-----10-- -----------10--------10-
A--8--------------- -----8------------8-----
E------------8----- --6-----6------6-------- that sounds nice

e-------------------- -3-
B---1--0h1----1----1- -0-
G---0----0----0----0- -0-
D---2----2----2----2- -0-
A-------------0----0- -2-
E-------------1----3- -3-

e------------------------
B------------------------
G--5----6----3----5----5-
D--3----3----1----5----5-
A--x----x----x----3------
E--6----4----4---------3-

that sounds nice. I wonder where I saw that before?

The whole thing was just kind of stupid and amusing. I just wanted to post something, and thought this would be amusing and kind of cool, showing step by step how to turn 3 songs into one song. :-P

some day when you feel the pressure to continually please the public after your best days have passed... and when you write your own collection of music that is as good.... you can call his shit stupid...
for now, why judge the man, you know, a lot of famous musicians do the same, altering parts of other songs and what not, i totally understand your point, but, calling it stupid,
is a stupid comment, not to be mean, but, think about it...
the ground beneath is nothing more than one point of view

i dont want to wake up, lost in the dreams of our fathers

yea. meet ranting. he's an analyzer (isaac?). but a dave fan. and a great poster. so when he puts up stuff like that, he has just been thinking, that's all. (that about right ranting)

thats not grammer. that's.....other stuff. stuff that i like to leave out, you know, like big letters and i instead of I and periods, well actually i use a lot of periods for some reason. here how about this

Is that almost correct, Ranting Thespian?

if you wrote that much material, over that period of time, and smoked that much weed, sooner or later you would recycle shit on accident... let alone think of it, then purposely "recycle" somethin you like

we've all seen how dave's songs evolve into other songs plenty of times. why would we expect a song to stop changing after it has been recorded.

i think it is hard to avoid reusing a riff in multiple songs. look at travis picking or blues progressions. most of that stuff has been done so many times because it is really good. there is no way to make it better.

but it was cool to see how he might do that. i mean i know what happens or how my own song riffs have changed and morphed into other songs but cool to see how it might have happened with dave. but isn't everyday many times called "everyday/#36". that's a big clue to how he does his thing. that's where the whole hani hani thing comes from (which makes that song when you see it at concert, D+T at Purdue we must have chanted that along with dave for like 10 minutes)

---------------

and for the record, this dave chord" like

Code: Select all

-9-
-7-
-5-
dave by no means invented this chord or even popularized it's use by musicians. it would better be called a "Police chord" or an "Andy Summers chord" cuz if you look at any police song you are bound to see at least one of these in there. and many songs are based entirely around these add9 chords (ie. "Every Breath You Take", "Message in a Bottle" etc...) many guitarist used these two songs as warm ups and finger stretching excersizes before dave even owned a guitar.

dave said he stumbled upon satelite riff by doing a finger excersize...makes me wonder if he was playing a Police song...
Dave chords are like this

Code: Select all

-7--7--7--4--6--3-
-x--4--x--1--2--x-
-5--x--5--2--x--x-
-7--7--6--4--5--2-etc..
like recently, two step, captian, TB and so on. he has really popularized and used these inversions extensively...anyways. my rant is done.
