The Martin vs Taylor Thread
The Martin vs Taylor Thread
Ya suck my balls, i k now its been done before, but most of all the old ones are off topic and full of BS and old info.
So, I sat down and played my frist martin and my first Taylor the other day. How can people possibly shop for both of these guitars. People are always saying, "I cant decide between the Taylor ___ and the Martin ____" To me, they sounded like polar opposites in sound.
I played the Martin HD28v, D28, and i think a D35 and another low end. I played the opnly taylor they had, a 3-something, I played a guild, and i think that was it.
The martin, felt like it was made for my lap. The sound was full, and it seemed like the harder i strummed the sexier it sounded. Nothign I played could sound bad, it truely made me sound like I knew what I was doing. The bass to it didnt impress me as much as I thought it would, but it was still there and sounded top notch.
The v-neck was uncomfortable and I definately hated it.
Overall, that D35 was by far the best com[puter i Have every played on.
The guild was a POS, worst guitar that I have ever played, i'd rather own a Johnson.
But back to the subject on hand.
The taylor sat on my lap horribly, it was uncomfrtable and awkward feeling. The playability for me was nothign compared ot the martin, and the sound was definately bright, but that was it, bright. There was a severe lack of upmf behind it. It felt awkward in my hands, it felt awkward on my lap, and it sounded nothign like the martin.
So why might I ask does it seem like everyone is looking between these two brands when they are so different?
that or, why am i so retarded that i think these two brands sounded so different?
pro's and cons, pick one, debate.
1....2.....3.....GO!
and im not putting "other" as an option on the poll just cause id rather see what people think of the big dogs standing alone against eachother.

First of all, were you shitfaced when writing this? I played a sick 12 string Dell the other night, and a nice Classical nylon string compaq....but i digress.checkii wrote:

The 35 is real nice, gives that Balls Out sound you expect from a martin. IMO the plain 28 is a little lacking. The HD28V sounds great but i agree the V neck is hard to play on, for me at least. (small hands, smell like cabbage)
You should try the HD-28, itll give you the balls of both those guitars, with the low profile neck, and doesnt get as muddied with bass as the 35. Over time i realized my trebles got a little lost with the 35.
All of this being said, i would take ANY ONE of them over a Taylor any day. Taylors have no balls, no bass, no umph, no fullness.

landslide in martin's favor...
i played a high end martin (i dont remember which) and a 714 before, and honestly i would take the martin if i just play like for myself and a small group of people or whatever, and the taylor if i was a live performer and i needed to plug in. the 714 i plugged in sounded awesome, but i wouldnt want it just to play in the backyard or around the campfire... thats what martins for IMO, and thats the kinda guitar I play...

which brings me to my next question, why is it that taylors sound so much better pluggd in. assuming that is why dave uses one o tour, coulodnt you just install it's electronics into a martin?
and i was tyoping up a bunch of other things while I was typing this, why i called it a computer, no idea, but i wasnt calling the D35 a low end, i just meant, in addition to those other guitars i tried a couple low end ones.

Besides, I think the ES blows. I just have a dying hatred for Taylor, so I can't vote I guess.

I always thought that he uses his taylor with the band because it has a crisper sound and therefore can cut through the band. He uses his Martins for D&T becuase he needs that fuller sound due to the lack of bass and whatnot.checkii wrote:which brings me to my next question, why is it that taylors sound so much better pluggd in. assuming that is why dave uses one o tour, coulodnt you just install it's electronics into a martin?

Thats what I always thought anyway.

that makes actual perfect sense after playing one. It really did have this bright sound that would scream through an amp.Beauford33 wrote:I always thought that he uses his taylor with the band because it has a crisper sound and therefore can cut through the band. I guess thats something good to think about before buying one.
Re: The Martin vs Taylor Thread
I eprsonally think Taylor is a "bandwagon" thing amongst this board. I liek Martins better. I played as few Taylors & wasn't impressed.checkii wrote:Ya suck my balls, i k now its been done before, but most of all the old ones are off topic and full of BS and old info.

i know. but i played some low end martins and they sounded pretty good, they played almost as good at the expensive ones and held their own in sound.jsgksu wrote:Make it a little more fair and play a high end Taylor. You were playing high end Martins and comparing them to the 300 series.
my main gripe was that the Taylor was much harder to play and felt like crap on my lap. the sound wasnt bad, just not what i would want in an acoustic.
I wonder who voted for Taylor btw....
