tightening the strings

Unread post by Grachi » Thu Aug 11, 2005 10:56 pm

hey. i just had a quick question.

when you put new strings on the guitar and then wind them so they become tight, does it matter which way to tighten them? for example. if your holding the guitar like your about to play, the 6,5,4 strings i turned counter clockwise. then the 3,2,1 (higher pitch strings) I turned clockwise, except the 1 string i turned the wrong way.

does that matter that that string isn't turned like the others?

i was worried it would put weird stress on the wood but its only the e string (its small anyway) but I wanted to check with u guys cause you know your stuff.

thanks
- Andrew

Well when I first started playing I turned them the wrong way and it didnt do anything to the tuning. I am not sure if it ruins the wood but it could I guess. The right way to turn them is to have the string curling around the peg on the inside of the head. So the E A and D strings would curl to the left around the peg, and the G B and E strings curl to the right around the peg.

I was told that when you look at the peg straight on, always turn it left

yes, it does matter. the strings should always be towards the middle of the neck.

Twisting the pegs the wrong way will lead to the nut breaking(also known as nutting or breakin nutt). Always have the leading edge of the string on the rightside of the left pegs, and leftside of the ride pegs(Looking @ the guitar).
