Stand Up Songs Good Live?
Stand Up Songs Good Live?
I have come to the conclusion that select songs from the latest DMB album are awesome live. Alot of these songs were doctored on the album and have awesome feel and groove to them when actually played straigfht through by the band....
> Hello Again - Always great live
> Dream Girl - Sounds awesome
> Smooth Rider - The drums make it groove
> Hunger for the Great Light - Sounds awesome without having the drums just fade in
Any one else have an opinion?

My opinions, for what it's worth:
Dreamgirl - Don't care for it on the CD, love it live
ODH - Like the CD version, lacks energy live
Stand Up - Skip it everytime on disc, but it blew me away live. Great energy and the band seems to really enjoy playing it.
ABI - live or in studio I love this, um, track.
AB - Love it on the CD, was not fortunate enought to hear it yet this tour.
Smooth Rider - Just OK on the CD, really dug it live. Nice groove.
EWU - Like it on disc, haven't heard it live.
OOMH - Like it studio, like it live.
Hello Again - OK on CD, outstanding live.
LB - I really like the song on the CD, but I was a bit disappointed with the live performance. Too high of expectations maybe?
SA - Like it on disc, haven't heard it live.
YMDT - Like it live or studio
SAWG - I liked it live, but like it better on the CD
HFTGL - Lacked energy live. I really like this song on the CD.

Alright here is my little run down for SU live:
Dreamgirl - Meh. The lyrics still suck, but at least they added a little something musically to it with that reprise outro.
Old Dirt Hill - For some reason I really enjoy this song. Live though it is a bit hollow. They need to come up with something to close it out instead of just singing the same line for 5 minutes with everyone clapping.
Stand Up - Nice little jam, but its still very mediocre and repetitive. Not even Carters breakdowns can save it.
American Baby Intro - The most musically complex song on the album (because, surprize surprize Carter is actually allowed to play the way he is capable of playing) and it is amplified ten fold live. I love when the music picks up and Dave's lyrics come in, very cool.
American Baby - Decent. I like Dave wailing over the end of it live, but its nothing you would request if given the choice.
Smooth Rider - Sucks, and then sucks again because they play it 2 times in a row for some odd reason.
Out Of My Hands - Why would you play this live? It is pointless. Its a nice little break on the album, but there is nothing this song brings to a live setting.
Hello Again - This is amazing, plain and simple. However I don't count this as an SU song since it was written way before the band ever met Batson.
Lousiana Bayou - Live it kicks ass. I love Leroi and Boyd tearing it up at the end.
Stolen Away On 55th & 3rd - I like it on the album, but just like Out Of My Hands, there is no point to this song in a live setting.
You Might Die Trying - Good tune, just need a way to close it out with more of a punch.
Steady As We Go - The lyrics suck and musically it reminds me of an 80's power ballad, which is never a good thing.
Hunger For The Great Light - Don't like it. Can't stand the lyrics and the music is so mind numbingly stupid that I can't understand how a guy who co-wrote The Dreaming Tree and The Last Stop actually was the brains behind a dumb song like this.
And on a final note, I keep hearing people from all the messageboards talk about what great energy the band plays some of these songs with. Lets try not to get confused here. Great energy does not equal a great song. They can play HFTGL with the most upbeat, rock your balls off energy ever and the song will still suck to me. Personally I can't wait for some of these songs to be shelved once this tour is over, just like with the Everyday songs way back when there are a 2-3 keepers and the rest can be lost and forgotten for all I care.
