Re: Kansas-Dust in the wind cover
Dude, this is one song that should never be 'altered' in any way. The signature part to this song is the killer guitar riff......without it, it's just not "Dust In The Wind".Swede wrote:http://s18.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1GGU ... 3ICT9ITNJZ

I think your voice could work very well with this song, but IMHO, you've got to play the guitar the way it's meant to be played and at the correct tempo.

Re: Kansas-Dust in the wind cover
Says anyone with two ears. The heart and soul of Dust In The Wind is the guitar. There's no question about it. And besides, it's one of the most beautiful guitar tracks ever. WHY would you ruin that signature riff???crash_in_to_me wrote:says who?IronMike778 wrote:Dude, this is one song that should never be 'altered' in any way.

i have no problem with the real riff and i could played it if i wanted to.. BUT!! when ever i record a cover i want it to play it in my own way, why should i play it so it sounds like the original??
even if it sounds like shit i want it to be in a new way.. a cover should never sounds like the original..

I'm all for people putting their own twist on a cover. I think it's great. BUT, there are some songs that JUST DON'T WORK if they are altered.....Dust In The Wind being one of them. Would Tripping Billies be Tripping Billies if you ripped to shreds the opening riff?? Of course not.Swede wrote:i have no problem with the real riff and i could played it if i wanted to.. I praised your singing on the song but said you might want to sing it to the guitar played the proper way. I think that's a fair criticism.
And I totally disagree with your statement that a cover should never sound like the original.

Where's the contradiction? Both of my statements are saying the exact same thing. And by the way, it's Kansas.crash_in_to_me wrote:how can you contradict yourself that badly?IronMike778 wrote:BUT, there are some songs that JUST DON'T WORK if they are altered.....Dust In The Wind being one of them.

I think you (IronMike) would get better responses to your posts if you didn't try to force your opinions on everyone/anyone who disagrees with you. I was going to defend your first few posts in this thread, but then you kind of went off and continued to get mad at anyone who had a different opinion than you.

I don't get why you interpret my posts the way you do. You make it sound like I attack people, which I clearly do not. Don't be so defensive, Shess.shess22 wrote:I think you (IronMike) would get better responses to your posts if you didn't try to force your opinions on everyone/anyone who disagrees with you. And where in this thread of posts am I forcing my opinions on anyone. I didn't force anything. I simply said that SOME songs leave no room to be 'interpeted'....if they're going to be covered then they need to be as close to the original as possible. Could something like Warehouse or Ants possibly be played around with and still be as effective as Warehouse or Ants actually are?? Doubtful. IMO, Dust In The Wind is in this category. The signature riff is the pure essence of the song.....you mess with it and you just don't have 'Dust In The Wind' anymore. The original poster even agreed with this.
How you interpret my posts as being 'mad and going off' on everyone is beyond me. You are reading WAY too deep into it, dude. I think the fact that you've made as many posts as you have in less than a year on these boards just kind of shows you have an opinion for anything and everything.

i agree with you mike. there are certain songs that shouldn't be changed. but there are also a lot of songs that sound better being modified, like AATW, hendrix and dave's covers sound as good as, proobably even better, than dylans. i guess this only works with "chorded" songs so that you can't really change a riff.

Alright, maybe it's just me then. I'm not really trying to look deep into your posts, thats just how i view them. Maybe I'm not reading closely enough, or taking enough time to see what you really mean. Either way, whatever.
I've only recently been posting a lot, and that's because I've been at work, with nothing else to do.

personally i really like the change. screw not being allowed to change it if you want. that's stupid. a cover can be done one of two ways, the same or differently. there's no code or book or law that says one has to be done and the other can't. it's all about what you feel like and what you want to do. that's what music is about anyway.
your vocals were ok. i didn't like the two different tracks. they were octives instead of harmonies if that makes any sense.
pretty good job. you're kicking out the covers aren't ya? what is this like 8 in the last two days or something? (i probably made up both of those numbers) anyway, keep it up, i'll still be around to hear people's recordings.
