because that open E string in the tab from the site sounds nasty to me

It sounds like he doesn't hit the low E on that chord in the chorus. I always thought he mutes it or just doesn't touch it, then puts the index on the E on the 6th fret. You are right, and the low E open doesn't sound right, but I don't think the 10th fret sounds right either, I really think he just doesn't play it, or mutes it.
