that's entirely subjective. i dont think umphrey's is in any way superior to DMB, although I enjoy both of their music a great deal.

No shit. You should see them live. Two of the best guitarists out there, in the same band. Then throw in Kris Myers, who, IMO, is *gasp* better than Carter. Yeah its all subjective, but musician-wise, Umphrey's is superior. :D

just out of curiosity how old are the umphreys guys? i mean...they are pretty new to me...ive listened to a few songs and have ordered a cd but from the talk it seems they are less experienced than leroi, boyd, carter, and butch but i dunno.

Hmmm, well, they are two TOTALLY different bands. Umphrey's has two lead guitarists, a bassist, a guy on keys, a drummer, and a percussionist. I'm pretty sure they are all in their 30's, not positive though. Either way, both guitarists are about as good as Trey, but better IMO (because they shred a lot).

personally i dont consider shredding to make one guy better than another, i consider, primarily, contribution to the overall sound and song of the band. but thats pretty sweet that you think they are Trey-level im pumped about gettin the cd...Anchor Drops, by the way, i hear thats the best

Its definitely an amazing album. Walletsworth, Mulche's Odyssey, Plunger, and Miss Tinkles Overture are some examples of how sweet Brendan and Jake are at guitar.

well back to the original idea of the thread, i love how leroi and boyd create particular parts that dave doesnt have in the guitar part. for example, in Recently, after "i watch her comb her hair" boyd and leroi do that little thing. similar things in songs like So Much to Say, after "here we have been standing for a long long time" the thing they do then. thats what i really love about boyd and leroi.

exactly why i can't stand them, two guitarists is two guitarists too many. and i doubt in any way that they are musically 'superior' or whatever you said. two totally different styles of music. the guys in the matthews band play a different style of music entirely, and what fits in that style. and don't discount dave as an amazing guitarist, he really is. people say 'oh a bunch of teenangers can learn his songs on a messageboard..." thats well and great and will get you by, but i doubt any of them are playing the songs the exact same way dave is. his style is nearly impossible to copy note for note.

and shredding is not that hard. its just like slap bass, a mindless drivel technique that impresses the weak minded.

and i'm not dissing on umphrey's, i've seen them live and it's a good show, but come on, they are two COMPLETELY different bands.

How many other rock acts have a lead guitarist that taps? I'm gonna have to go with Spenis and say as of now, Umphrey's is better than DMB. Not to say I dont love both, I think everyone on these boards loves them some DMB, but with the last 2 albums (not counting BS, I consider LWS) sucking in ways DMB should never suck, I say Umphrey's wins.

Oh, and Leroi and Boyd do work very well together. Early recordings (93,94) of Recently with the long Jam, not Water Wine, are really impressive.

a lead guitarist that taps makes them better in no ways then a lead guitarist who uses a pick. it's just a different technique that can be used to add variance to their sound.
