Grace is Gone on a scale of 1-10

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Grace is Gone on a scale of 1-10

Unread post by 1eyed_jack » Tue Sep 02, 2003 2:11 am

I think I'm going to try and learn to play this, but I've never really tried fingerpicking before. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being easy) how difficult would this be to learn if you haven't fingerpicked before.

I would have to say unless you started from the begining without a pick, I'd give finger picking sons like grace is gone a 6-7 to learn without finger picking already.

its not that hard even if you've never done it before...i don't know about a 4, but it really isn't that hard. but if you're goign to do that one, do WAYG too. they're basically the same

It's a very simple fingerpicking song. Now if you want something tougher, go and try Leo Kottke's "Busted Bicycle." But learn how to fingerpick first...

Even though it is not a very creative song dave-wise, it is a very beautiful melody regardless. Boyd's soloing, especially live, is better than most other songs he plays these days. I'd give it a seven.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

Actualy, Dave has said he thinks it's one, if not the, best song he's ever written. Also, the reason why I give it high in fingerpicking, is because it's about half improv, it's not the same exact riff over and over, you create what ever variation you want at the time, since it's improv.

WAYG, though, has a set picking in the finger picking versions. If you really want to learn GIG, I suggest learning WAYG first to get the feel of it down first, then try to concquer the improv.
