Concering the Chet Atkins SST Studio (Also,
i think today's model sounds like Dave's)
Well, I was at my favorite guitar store, when I saw a Chet Atkins SST (the one dave played), and it was the Epiphone model. I didn't like it at all.
Then, a month later, they had the Gibson model. I played it, and I can see why dave liked it so much. It's got GREAT action, and and really good acoustic sound coming out of the amp (but I was also using an acoustic amp too, but it sounded fine with a fender amp). The guitar is obviously GREAT live, since it really reduces the feed back, but for sitting at home playing on the couch, I'd rather have that taylor.
Pretty much this, the SST is a great guitar and not horribly expensive, and a definate buy over other solid body acoustic guitars (except the les paul acoustic and the one limited edition guild that I can't remember the name of. There were only about 100 made of those . . . but both are 3000 or more).
If you are looking for a good performance guitar, the SST is great, and you won't look back on buying it. But, for just lounging around and such (unless people are sleeping, and you can plug it in and put on headphones), I'd go with the acoustic.
But, I just noticed your new post that you say you have a martin. Well, if you are bored with your taylor, and like your martin, I say go get the SST, but you might want to be prepared to missing your taylor.

all jokes aside, a new guitar will only relieve you from your bordom for the week after you get it. Learning and growing and writing and performing is the only cure for guitar boredom. I played a takamine for 7 years and never got bored, my parents just decided to get me a new guitar cause i am getting into performing.

Re: Dave's guitar
You know i've always been a bit sceptic about these chets but damn....i was listening to a few 93 shows....dave would come on before the band and do a few tracks, that chet sounded incredible.DmbFanJason wrote:Hi...I am looking at selling my Taylor and getting a chet atkins guitar...
does anyone know which Chet Dave played in the 96 shows....I dont want the one from the Live in Chicago show(98)...but the one from the "Cow Palace" show or the "crashing the quarter" show...does anyone know what I am talking about?
is it the SST model? also, does the SST model from 2001 sound any different than the SST model made in 96?
So yeah go for it, you might wanna change the pickups though..i dunno

You're saying you don't want the one from Chicago...are you just talking about the black one? I always thought that he just had a black one and a natural one, and they were both the Gibson SST. I know he played the black one back in 96, because I have a video from David Letterman.
I can't believe that we would lie in our graves wondering if we had spent our living days well, and I can't believe that we would lie in our graves dreaming of things that we might have been...

*************MORE ABOUT THE CHET***************
I have heard the sound from dave 89 and other Chets he played, and from the sound I played, they sound EXACTLY the same. Also, you are not going to want to change the pickups. The pickups are not like electric guitar ones. It picks up the vibration in the body on a special acoustic pickup. They are inside the body, not oustide. They pickups are very tricky, sophisticated, and expensive, and don't replace them unless they're broken.
Also, all the Chet guitars dave played, they were all Chet Atkins SST Studios. They come in 3 colors, black, natural, and burst. He started with a black, and then eventualy used the natural (he could have just stripped the stain instead of buying a new Chet. John Lennon stripped his Ephiphone Casino, which I really want to try the re-release. It actualy gives a better tone, taking off the stain, and just apllying a thin clear one, but that is expensive tro strip it and not harm the wood, and it's not that huge of a difference for the money, I think.)
Anyways, like I said, it's a great guitar, and today's models are as good as yesterday's (these haven't been out for that long. I believe they were invented in the 80s, if not late 80s). Also, they are Gibson guitars, that ensures there is good quality. I have always trusted Gibson, and never played a bad Gibson electric or acoustic. I also have to trust them, since I am a Les Paul fan
.
Anyways, yes, you do get bored with some guitars. Also, it's up to you to decide is it worth the risk. I say yeah, go for it, it's a great guitar, and perfect for the stage, but that's my opinion.
