So how do the Stand Up songs work live?

I'm talking mostly about the really crappy studio ones, like Old Dirt Hill, Smooth Rider, etc. Have they improved live?

Not really. If you don't like them in the studio you won't like them live, and you'll especially hate Smooth Rider since they basically play it two times in a row live.

Agreed with Gianni for the "bad" songs. The mediocre songs (and by that I mean the rest of the album) are actually very decent live.

I liked ODH less live...it was still good. Smooth Rider I did however enjoy a lot more live. Hunger is a good one and so are Stand Up and YMDT. Louisiana Bayou is amazing!!! Dreamgirl is pretty cool too. As much as I love American Baby on the album...I can't stand it live.

It's pretty much personal opinion. Download a show from this year or something. Most have at least 7 Stand Up songs on them.

Dreamgirl has improved IMMENSLEY from the time i saw it at hartford to when i saw it at mansfield. a fade out jam has now practically become a reprise outro with a solid jam.

Old Dirt Hill is still lame.

I think stand up is damn cool live with the marching drum beat.

American Baby actually isn't that bad, better than the studio, the jam rocks out pretty hard.

Smooth Rider is just like gianni said,,, they play it twice in a row. not necessary.

Out of My Hands is pretty nice... i dunno... i think it would be best as the first song of an encore... cos after a heavy song, ahem hello again, it's an enery killer.

Hello Again is as fantastic as ever.

Louisiana Bayou is also incredible. Amazing jam, with or without guests.

Stolen Away... worth seeing once.

You Might Die Trying... badass... like Hello Again and LB.

Steady as We Go is alright... i'm glad they crank it out at the end there, that's for sure.

Hunger is solid and strong live too.

In essence... the power songs (best of the album imo) are amazing live; HA, LB, YMDT and HftGL. Everything else is worth seeing once or twice.

i think everything is better live(since the live show can't be overproduced). a lot of the songs either were vaulted to status of 'a good dave song' or 'maybe once in awhile this will be a good live song'. unlike the other albums i can't see one song where i absolutely have to hear the live variation, since they are written in such a way that they will need to play them awhile to find areas to improve. with that said, i lost my copy of stand up 3 days after it came out, so i can't comment on specific songs, but i will say from what i heard at the concert, everything is better, which is what i think everyone expected, since you can't get worse then studio stand up.

Yea..they started doing that exteded end jam after I saw it live, but I saw that on live 8 and it made that song live a lot better than it was.

I like Smooth Rider, but twice in a row sucks.
I love the chanting in dreamgirl, and YMDT and Hunger are pretty kick ass live. I love watching dave fumble around with the little lead lick in Bayou. It's good.

i like all the songs of stand up, and i think there even better live.
"you might die trying" is one of my fav's but i think the new album is great live. one thing that's starting to bother me is the constant playing/opening with "one sweet world" and "everyday". i love both those songs but i think they are over playing them live. i am glad to see some old songs being thrown in lately.

they seem to be using a lot of the same old songs constantly. like for example, don't drink the water and crash seem to be getting huge revivals, not to mention too much and two step, which are usually being played as encores and closers.

What is wrong with old dirt hill. I dig the beat.
I could do without American Baby. Dreamgirl, Die Trying, Old Dirt and Bayou are solid live and studio.

Die tryin and Bayou are incredible live! Incredible I tells you! This is coming from a guy who really disliked "Stand Up" matter of fact I tossed it after a few days. BUT, live versions of DMB songs are always better than the studio so there you go

I can only speak from hearing live recordings of this Summer's tour, but I still only like the songs I like on the album, live. Although, all of them music takes on another dynamic live, that's what makes DMB such an amazing live band if not the best live band out there that's top 40.
