If you hold it with your middle finger you dont have as much control over the pick. You cant pick as fast, and you will drop it more often. It you curl your index and hold it between the side of your index and thumb then you have a better grip and you will be able to play faster and have better precision.

It's all really preference. It takes a lot of practice too in order to keep control of the pick.

I highly recommend these picks in your preference of size and thickness:

the proper way seems awkward to me. I hold it like the proper way, but instead of curling the index finger I use it more to hold the pick with the thumb to... but I don't use my middle finger either.

I don't know I'm just weird.

i can't hold a pick with just my pointer and thumb. The grip of the pick goes to shit as soon as i start strumming...i don't know why tho? maybe its my shitty guitar...i have to throw my middle finger in there to keep the pick gripped..

I just wanted everyone to know, that in the two and a half years since I first posted this message, I have incorperated everyone's suggestions and learned to hold a pick.
