about standard notation, sorta
so...for a little while when i've been at church and since i've been playing guitar, during the worship part of service where we sing hymns out of the hymnals, i've been looking at the music in there, and i'm wondering about how a guitarist would go about playing the songs in that book, using that sheet music, what i'm wondering about the most, is how a guitarist would know what to play, because most of the chords in there are only shown with two notes, would i just play the chord of the base note, or would a i need the music in another and more detailed form? how would it work?

most hymnals usually come with a separate guitar book that has chords for all the songs contained within in it.seth_southerland wrote:so...for a little while when i've been at church and since i've been playing guitar, during the worship part of service where we sing hymns out of the hymnals, i've been looking at the music in there, and i'm wondering about how a guitarist would go about playing the songs in that book, using that sheet music, what i'm wondering about the most, is how a guitarist would know what to play, because most of the chords in there are only shown with two notes, would i just play the chord of the base note, or would a i need the music in another and more detailed form? how would it work?
the two note lines you are looking at are most likely vocal harmony. if you are well versed enough in harmonic progressions, then you should be able to figure out what chords you should play. if not, you might want to look for the accompanying guitar book
and if you play with a piano player, it would just be easy to follow him or her

the idea of that music being vocal harmony makes a lot of sense, because i have been watching the piano player, she is very good, and yeah she is playing a lot more than what the hymnal shows for the music, and aside from that i've seen that she has her own sheet music, so that must be why i get confused when i see the music in the book, and then see what she plays and notice she is doing more
yeah i guess i would have to get my hands on an accompanying book of guitar music
thanks fj, i am further enlightened by your knowledge

You got to get a new picture. You look arrogant, and when you consistently educate me and others on all things music, well, it's just started to bring me down.fatjack wrote:most hymnals usually come with a separate guitar book that has chords for all the songs contained within in it.seth_southerland wrote:so...for a little while when i've been at church and since i've been playing guitar, during the worship part of service where we sing hymns out of the hymnals, i've been looking at the music in there, and i'm wondering about how a guitarist would go about playing the songs in that book, using that sheet music, what i'm wondering about the most, is how a guitarist would know what to play, because most of the chords in there are only shown with two notes, would i just play the chord of the base note, or would a i need the music in another and more detailed form? how would it work?
