grey street

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

when playing grey street, are you supposed to mute the d string during the verse? it sounds ok but a little overpowering

yeah i know, the tab shows only the low e and the g strings, but it is kind of awkward to mute. I checked the video but it sounds like he hits the d about half the time... just wondering what is the correct way

I agree. I mute it because I think it sounds annoying when left open, plus thats how Dave plays it.

I always mute both strings. I use a little bit different fingerings than the way dave plays it. I always keep my ring finger on the G string and then althernate between my pointer and middle finger depending on what chord is being played. This way you can always have your pointer laying across strings to mute even when your not using the finger to fret a note.

Yeah, it really helps me out. I use that method for LIOG jam and Granny. I do tripping billies Dave's way. It's a lot easier and smoother for me as you only move 1 finger throughout the whole process.

Code: Select all

e|-
B|-
G|-7-2 ring finger
D|-x-x
A|-x-x
E|-7-2 middle finger

Code: Select all

e|-
B|-
G|-4-6 ring finger
D|-x-x
A|-x-x
E|-3-5 pointer finger
always have your pointer laying across all the top 4 strings

On the topic of Grey Street, I noticed that Dave plays it like this as well:

Code: Select all

--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
--7-----4---6\--2-----4---6\--2----4--
--x-----x---x---x-----x---x---x----x--
--x-----x---x---x-----x---x---x----x--
--7-----3---5\--2-----3---5\--2----3--
  D D U D D U D D
Sometimes Dave slides from the 3xx4 chord to get back to the 7xx7 chord:

Code: Select all

--2----4/7---
--x----x-x---
--x----x-x---
--2----3/7---
  D D D
Maybe this would help someone, sorry if this is confusing.
and all the little ants are marching..

i usually let it ring when i use my ring finger to play those chords.
i can mute both A and D strings, but i like to play that open D string.

so is that third chord a 5xx5 or 5xx6?

I always mute the 5xx5 half the time and just said fuck it and started playing it 5xx6.

it's in the key of D so that's definitively 5xx6
