Holding a Pick

OK...now it's a little late for me to be relizing this...but I dont think I'm holding the pick in the proper manner...I usually kinda hold it with my index and middle finger on one side and my thumb on the other, as opposed to holding it between my thumb and the side of my index finger...Do I need to adjust my method, or is it not really that big of a deal?

If it's not working then change, otherwise use whatever method of holding the pick. However, with that being said, who the hell taught ya to hold a pick?. Just joking. Yeah so, like i said before - use whatever you feel is most comfortable.

I never took any lessons...I just started playing...I was just wondering if there was any benefit to holding it the other way?

I do not think there is any benifit, it just the supposed "proper way". Other than accuaracy, which i would think you would not have a problem with becasue your so used to holding the pick your way. Does that make sense?..

Don't worry about it ... i was worried until i realized that i would have to almost completely learn how to play again if i switched the way i hold my pick ...

BTW ... one good reason for holding it the "right way" according to my guitar teacher, the bottom three fingers are useful when throwing in simple fills, etc ... while playing with a pick

I also have never taken lessons and the better I have gotten at playing songs, the more issues I have noticed about my pick holding. For instance, I often drop my pick into my guitar. Also, I have a tendency to hit my picvk against the face of my guitar on the upstroke. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful.

it only will matter if you want to play some songs that the guitar player uses a pick on one string and then his middle finger on a different string. timmy does this

yea thats sounds like me. I use to hold my pic a little too lightly that halfway through a song just plucking the strings it would take off on me and usually fall right down the sound hole.

plus you open to door to do so much more on a guitar(plucking multiple strings at once being the most obvious). plus you'll never have to worry about losing a pic or not having one.

dude I hold it the same way. And I also noticed for like my first year of playing well, I would drop it or it would start to spin around , like slightly move. But now after playing for a while both hard and soft, it has seemed to be ok to hold. So whatev works, you'll hand will start to correct it in the long run

i just watched people like dave and slash and people like that, and watched the way they hold they're picks, and just sort of did it the way they did

It's all about holding your hand in parallel to the guitar top ... It's fluid sweeping motions (no matter how long the sweep is) ...

Also try to keep the pick perpendicular to the strings so that you're able to be precise about which string you're picking/plucking/strumming/whatever
