This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

Here's a video that might help some of you...The first 2 verses are fingerpicked and then you break out the pick for the pre-chorus which starts at "Cause I wonder sometimes about the outcome, Of a still verdictless life"....The rest of the song is strummed until you get to "Everybody is just a stranger but that's the danger in going my own way" where you would tuck the pick back in between the index and middle finger (or whatever you're most comfortable with) and fingerpick that part, then back to strumming again...Takes some practice but will definitely add alot to your skill and dexterity on guitar.

wow, this song is hard.

I used to think I could play this. I havent tried in a long time, (havent tried any Mayer in a long time actually) I never played the slaps, I cant get the second half to sound right with the slap but Im getting there. Ive gotten kind of bored with guitar lately because all I pretty much know or play is Dave. Hopefully I can get on a JM kick for a while and learn some of his shit.

between what two notes should the second slap be played, I cannot get it to sound right. I need a super slowed down recording or something.

Code: Select all

e---------x---------------x-----------
b-----3---x---3-----------x-----------
g-----0h2-x---0---------0-x-------0---
d---------x----------4----x-----4-----
a---------x------0---5----x---5-------
E---3-----x---------------x-----------

Here's a slower video:

could you give me a fingerguide for what fingers on your right hand are picking it?
For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again

Yeah i need a video of that last finger picked part that checkii is talking about. That video that was posted in this thread helped so much for the first part now I just need to get that next part down.

that's the only part i dont know and i swear there is nothign on the jmtabs.com tab refering to that part. I didnt know it was finger picked, it almost sounded like two hand tapping to me. but what do i know, i have the worst ears in the world.

Ive always thought this part was hard as hell and cant get it to sound right:

Code: Select all

Part 2
This is the basic riff
In concert, he plays variations of it
e------------------------------|
b----3---3-------3-----3---4---|
g----4---2-------2-----2---2h4-| x2
d----2---2h5p2---2h5---2---2---|
a--3---3-------3-----3---3-----|
e------------------------------|
The video on jmtabs doesnt even match that tab, he throws in a pull off. Can someone tab that better or do a video. Sorry to ask so much of you all, I recently am really compelled to learn how to play this well and arent doing so well so far.

The tab there is better, as are the tabs for the rest of his songs.
