My Joint-Effort Greystreet Mixdown (Tutorial-esque)
I would go ahead and do your thing and not expect anything from me.. I move-out this week and my drumset stays here, and I am pretty busy with things, so I will have to squeeze it into my schedule to sit down and play for a couple hours.
BTW, I am going to PM you a link to a zero'd copy billy's track.
Beef: I have included that on the tutorial page now.

Hmmmf. I'll get you a zeroed one tomorrow. I think I added something like 6.4 seconds to the front of billy's track. His starts on the second chord.fatjack wrote:i would, but he PM'ed me the wrong trackRoastbeef wrote:Thanks geekmug. i really wish i had a good enough electric to play clean..but it sounds like crap. yea, this is good stuff though, im definetly going to use it. like i said, not very experienced on the electric, and just got my pedals so im experimenting a lot. the only question was the reverb. i didn't actually have any on it. maybe it was the recording. but i agree, i had way too much distortion. i need to read up and find out about the high's, mid's and low's too. not too familiar w/ what sound should be used w/ what kind of music. thanks for the tips though.Roastbeef wrote: A few comments on your sound though. Mellow out a bit on the overdrive/distortion. It's way too heavy. Likewise, the reverb was too heavy and made for a track that was too full and chunky. In this setting a slightly distorted electric (or maybe even clean?) sound with much less reverb would've sounded better, IMO. Maybe even more mids to give a more classic electric sound would've worked better.
Hmm. Something was fattening up your sound. Maybe the sustain of so much distortion. Anyway, less is more sometimes with the distortion unless you're playing Metallica or something. From my limited (and long time ago) experience with distortion settings, a lot of bass and treble and little or no mids give that really chunky heavy metal tone. Adding mids will give you a more "classic rock" tone. I'm sure there are others here that can elaborate more on this...Appsoldier wrote:the only question was the reverb. i didn't actually have any on it. maybe it was the recording. but i agree, i had way too much distortion.
i had to mic the amp. i don't have an adapter for my guitar chord to go straight to the mic jack.geekmug wrote:How were you recording the guitar? Was it direct-in or a mic on an amp? 'cause it sounds like you mic'd the amp.. and then I am going to say that was where the reverbish sound came from, but if it was direct-in then it musta been too much low-end coming off the guitar into the distortion.
gotta question about that too though. how do i hook it in, do i run it through my pedals or will the gutiar play through the chord straight to the cpu. i dont' have an active pickup in my acoustic, does that even matter?Roastbeef wrote:Go to Radio Shack. Bring 5 dollars...Appsoldier wrote:i don't have an adapter for my guitar chord to go straight to the mic jack.
Are you trying to record your acoustic or your electric? If your acoustic you need some sort of pickup, or you need to mic it. If you're looking for a great quality acoustic pickup at a relatively low cost, see this thread. I use a B-Band A-1/AST.Appsoldier wrote:gotta question about that too though. how do i hook it in, do i run it through my pedals or will the gutiar play through the chord straight to the cpu. i dont' have an active pickup in my acoustic, does that even matter?
For the electric, check if your amp has a line out jack. Then plug in a standard 1/4" guitar cable into it on one end and into a reducer into the mic port on the other. That should pick-up all your effects.
For the reducer, be sure to get a 1/4" to 1/8" mono to mono reducer. Again, they're like five bucks at Radio Shack.
I already have a pickup. its just not active (doesn't have a battery in it). it too has to be plugged up. so i guess i can just do the same thing w/ the line out on the amp. will i be able to hear what im playing (the effects) through the amp at the same time...im not at home so i can't play around w/ this yet, just tyring to figure out what to expect. thanks for the help so far.Roastbeef wrote:If your acoustic you need some sort of pickup, or you need to mic it.
