Original Song Idea (In Progress)

Unread post by Roastbeef » Wed Aug 20, 2003 3:12 pm

I wouldn't consider myself much of a songwriter. However, I sometimes plink around with different riffs or melodies and came up with this. I recorded it a few weeks ago and it has evolved a bit since then. The playing here is pretty sloppy, but you get the idea.

Anyway, my question is whether this is something with any potential. Obviously there is no structure or anything yet in terms of it being a song, but is it worthy of future development? Most of the things I make up on guitar are just little things I plink around with that don't really develop into a full song. This one though is fun to play and I think sounds pretty cool. Does it remind you of any artists/songs? Any other thoughts?

it could definitely become a song, man. keep working at it. sometimes it's great to put something away and pull it out a day or two, a week, or even months after just to approach it from a different standpoint and develop it even furthur. :) do it! would love to see how this comes out. definitely a different piece, and it sounds like it is enjoyable to play, and that's an added bonus! ;)

sounded interesting... for some reason i was expected something quite common, but you pulled off a very original idea... just come up with a really cool bridge or something...

Oh totally. I have a few of this little things that I've been playing for years, but I haven't developed any of them into a full song yet. This one is totally new and obviously the muted strumming is influenced by all the Dave I've been playing recently.

Ha! Magnum PI! That's it. I knew the second part sounded like something from an 80's action TV theme, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Is it too cheesy? That was a cool show though.

I think that's a compliment?

Yeah, the parts in the recording actually came together pretty quickly; probably about ten minutes before I recorded it. Since then I've add a few different fills to make it more interesting and cleaned up the playing a lot. I'm now working on some sort of bridge or transition. I even have a concept in mind in terms of lyrics, but I've never written a song so that should be interesting...

Any other thoughts?
