Bending?

Unread post by jsgksu » Sat Jun 25, 2005 2:24 pm

I have a question on string bends

Code: Select all

e:--------10--------------------------------------------------|
B:--10b12~~~~10b12r10--------10-----------------------9-------|
G:----------------------9b11~~~~9b11r9-------9---7---11b13----|
D:---------------------------------------7h9---9--------------|
A:------------------------------------------------------------|
E:------------------------------------------------------------|
For this tab (Over the Hills and Far Away Solo) how do you do the bends. Is there a certain direction to bend, up, down. How do you know youre bending from 10 to 12. I dont solo at all really, nor do I play music much different from DMB. Im trying to branch out a little and get better at lead and picking notes as opposed to just strumming chords. I love this song and can play the intro, just dont know how do this solo. Im rambling, thanks for any help.

the fret after the "b" is what pitch you are bending to

for instance 10b12 on the b string means you are playing an A on the 10th fret, but you bend the note until the pitch reaches the note on the 12th fret, a B in this case. you have to listen to know if you are bending enough, but a good way to check is to play the note that you are supposed to bend to first without bending. if you do this you will know what pitch you are targeting with your bend

and direction does not matter when you bend, but you have to be practical: you wouldn't bend downwards if you are on the first string right? you would just move the string off the fretboard, and that never sounds good

the code is a little deceptive. if you're new to soloing, i think it would be more readily comprehendible this way:

Code: Select all

e:--------10--------------------------------------------------|
B:--10b12~~~~12r10-----------10----------------------9-------|
G:----------------------9b11~~~~11r9---------9---7---11b13----|
D:---------------------------------------7h9---9--------------|
A:------------------------------------------------------------|
E:------------------------------------------------------------|
this makes it more obvious that the first two bends are held while playing the notes on the high e string.

i've had a few, my guitar is out of tune, and i used a digital camera to record, but perhaps these vids will help:

bending up to hit the respective note

the first bend of the song

it doesnt matter if you bend down or up. always the note gets higher. what you are doing is creating tension on the string, no matter which way you ben
For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again

in this case it does matter. you have to bend the A upwards to the B in order to be able to hit the D. if you bent down to the B, you'd hit the high e string.
