Guitar newbie question on "One Sweet World"
Whenever I play the verse for One Sweet World it sounds like total poo. Sounds a lot like a cat hissing with hair in its throat more than anything. Anyhoo, my question is regarding the 3 muted strums at the end of the verse. 3?? After watching/ listening to the video, and hearing a few songs of Dave live, I can't imagine it being 3 whole strums? The transition is just too skinkin fast.
Do I just cosmically suck at playing or am I missing something? Thanks.

Really, the mutes just come from small strokes in an up/down/up patter. Dave speeds it up some to keep with the rhytm of the sounded notes. So there are three strums, but you have to just be moving your wrist. Do not move your entire arm to make the stroke. Just act like you are trying to snap your wrist/shake water off of it. It takes some time and practice. Well hope this helps.

Dave does play individual notes, but he really picks them out with a strumming motion. They are all downstrokes to pick out the notes. You probably can find video of Dave playing at FarmAid. He plays that and a gaggle (I used gaggle...so) of other songs. Really great videos. Dave I think either always is strumming or using a strum motion, but since no one other than Dave is Dave, we kinda have to play things differently. So do what you must to make it sound right, but it is definitely a strum on the mutes.

Yea, that's what i did. I didnt do the strums at all at first. Listen to the L@LC version with timmy. You can hear it all almost perfectly.

Yes they are definitely muted strums...but when dave plays them as strums, the "mutes" are usually just for insurance since he is the bomb and can hit one string only when he strums most of the time. so he is without a doubt strumming, and hitting only one string with each strum, and occasionally there is a mute involved when dave accidentally hits an extra string. hope this helps, it takes a LOT of practice to be able to do it only remotely well
