Jimmy Buffet covered tripping billies

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I like jimmy buffet like the next guy but that was terrible lyrically, I mean the music sounded great but jesus if your going to do a cover know the words better and especially when playing it in virginia. now I dont feel bad singing cause if buffet can do that then I can try it as well......

i think he meant for it to be like that. he's a professional musician for god sakes, i think if he wanted to cover it the right way he could. he knows what he's doing unlike half the mopes on these boards, using his own voice for a cover rather than trying to imitate someone.

Granted the voice kills me and I'm no Parrothead, but it's entertaining and also inspires me as I always thought I did the worst DMB covers....
Im still leaning towards "this is a pile of crap".
Imo if the vocals suck, then i cant enjoy the song.
And whats more, im sure some1 on here said this song finished off the show or the tour or something? Man, i would pissed if i was a fan of this band and they done that!
I agree, I'm willing to bet that some of Jimmy's fans were like, "what the fuck? screw Dave Matthews, he sucks!"

I always tell people I dont like to play covers note for note and strum them the exact same cause its boring and I dont want to hear the song the exact same way i always here it.

but that's a lie, I actually am just horrible at guitar and use that as an excuse for not being able to play songs correctly :P

I think that if he knew the words better it would sound better, he was stumbling a lot.

If it was just Jimmy Buffet playing this song solo and posted that cover on the boards it would have been average in relation to the musicians on these boards. I wasn't impressed at all with Jimmy's part of this song, but the band did good I thought. I loved whatever it was at the beginning that they did, like it was on the album.

I don't think that Jimmy was used to singing Dave's style either at all, hence it sounded crappy to most(including me).

I liked the steel drum solos at the end, haha.

Sounded like it was fun, which as someone already mentioned is the point of Jimmy Buffet. Everyone there was likely completely wasted, and I guarantee they had a great time. There's really no need to pick the performance apart.

dave is popular, but not pop (even tho pop may have come from that word)

do you have a recording of that cover?
No, i used to but it just pissed me off everytime i heard it thinking that keller was dissing on dave. I mean, i think maybe keller doesn't like dave cause they both started out the same. Playing countless gigs in bars trying to get their sound out and dmb just went big and keller didn't. I love keller williams and i think he is making his cash just not as much as dmb.

gotta say i hate the vocals.........but i LOVE that guys band.....real energy there...... billies is the sort of song i figured that no one but dmb could do well.....as its an odd/busy/funky/marching tune not just pop crap...(im expecting enreque englasias to cover W.A.Y.G anyday)
it reminded me of the billies on "breath a bulegrass dmb tribute" (dont know if thats a popular cd but i love it......hillbillies)
jimmy buffet aint heard of over here in UK (dmb also)...... but from the sound of his voice im not desperate to order his cds

you're in the UK? cool shit, we are getting a lot more every month.

I agree, i've only heard one good cover of Billies and it was a tribute band here, and it wasnt even the whole band, just a guy singing on guitar and a guy on sax. I think i liked it cause the guy didnt try to sing like dave at all, he sang in his own voice, I hate the sdound people make when they try and force the dave sound on their voice.

everytime i hear someone trying to play dave it makes me feel. 1) pitty, as i know some people try damn hard to no avail 2) even more impressed that dave can.
im guessing the mixture of strong virginian accent mixed with south african accents is the reason for his cool sounding vocals.......plus the fact hes a GREAT talent.
yeah im from the uk, been using the site for quite a few years but havent the time to post much....(nor the desire to get chastised by some college kid getting angry if i put up a post anything like one that was up 3 years ago..........;) )

why would he cover someone if he didnt appreciate their music. it may have been a stab at the new material if anything, and how the band has blown up in recent years. plus a fair amount of people who attend jam band type shows, who keller generally opens for or tours with generally think dmb sold out or have never cared for the band.

Isn't Keller signed to Dave Matthew's ATO Records?

and by the way, Jimmy Buffet is a great pilot. He keeps his airplanes at Jet Aviation in Palm Beach Int. airport. I've seen him taxi by a couple of times.
