Music variety - mixing music genres

Unread post by tjmac66pc » Thu Aug 21, 2003 1:57 pm

Hey all,

curious to get opinions on this...i'll be writing/producing an album (hopefully within the next year) with a good friend of mine who is a musical genious on a variety of levels....myself i'm only an acoustic/electric guitar player...our plan is to combine acoustic/guitar riffs with techno, but also to have some alternative songs, rocks songs, a little jazziness, with a little jackjohnson/jasonmraz type styles involved in there as well just as kind of a big mix...i was curious as to what people would think about a multi-genre type band/music....we're gonna give it a shot regardless, but we have some really 'different' sounds/songs planned...

thanks for any input... :D

perhaps it would be good, but it really eliminates the possibility of any real solid fan base. you won't get a lot of people who like all your work... you'll get a lot of different people who only like SOME of your work.

the best way to mix genres is in actual songs. if you have an album that has songs from twelve different genres, not many people will listen to the whole thing. if you have 12 songs that all mix 12 genres, then thats a different story. not everyone will like it, but if a person likes one song, they are likely to enjoy all of the rest as well

i think it would be cool. i like a good mix. complexity and levels are great but sometimes simplicity is awesome as well. good luck man. it sounds really awesome. give us a clip sometime.

If you can pull it off well, people will like it. Blending different influences works great, the band i play with is mainly indie, but where we all come from jazz/classical/world backgrounds, most of our songs pull so many influences together. Got some ones with kinda african dance rhythms, ones where i can blast out latin guitar solos etc. Its very hard nowadays to find music that is just purely one genre, as musical styles develops from others.

Hope it goes well

thanks for the input, you all bring up good points...i guess the idea is very similar to radiohead but maybe with a little more classical/alternative rock and techno in there...but fan base or no fan base, i just want to create something different that can be heard on many different levels...i want to post some of my covers first, for some critiquing, but i'm having trouble going about getting my songs on the internet...any suggestions, i've tried angelfire but that ain't working...not sure what else to do...an also, they have to be in mp3 format correct?

i have this one song with some friends of mine. we don't have a full band but this is what it would be like if we did.... imagine listening to a song that starts off with a simple acoustic riff. then in comes the band and the electric. it get's pretty metal influenced here. then for a bridge, everyone stops and boom, they bust out some barbershop quartet style. all acapella like. then back to the acouastic riff with the full band and maybe some bass soloing stuff to end it all.

i think people want to here a mix of styles in their music. just making different songs of different styles, that's called a compilation CD.

most of all, do what feels right and sounds good to you. don't try too hard. sometimes it's good to alienate yourself, sometimes it isn't.
