it's a hard song to play...i still can't do it right.the_drewster wrote:Well Fuk 'a' duck. Is that what everyone does? That's gonna take me another 6 months to master.
I still don't know how to do that when my strumming hand is going at 60 mph.bbatsell wrote:I usually either just don't strum the low E at all.

It took me awhile to get this song down. It is by far my favorite DMB song so it was a huge accomplishment the day I could play it. Thanks to my gf and some of the people on the boards I got it down. My advice for getting this song right is:
1)play it slow, without the muting just hitting the notes that Dave plays
2)speed it up and try incorporating the mutes
3)think fast small up and down strokes
4)never stop moving your hand
5)keep at least 1 finger muting most of the strings at any given time
6)play along with the audio and videos
7)once you start getting closer, record yourself. Listen to it, then listen to Dave play it. Figure out where you are missing the mark and work on that specific part
This song is a tricky song because it uses fast strumming, hard muting, 5 frets of notes, and it requires accuracy with the strumming.

Just Do It
For me, this was one of those songs that I could never play, then one day it just clicked.
Just keep playing along with Dave, and eventually the planets will align and you'll do it right. Make sure you just have fun, and over time, the technique will fall into place.
If you are constanly worrying about it while you play, you'll never be confident or comforatble enough to actually play it and it will sound like shit.
This is how most of Dave's songs seem to work for me. If you losen up and just go with it, everything will come in time.

this may be considered bad technique to some, but as far as muting the low E (escpecially on the 10-9-7 progression on the A) goes, i've found through contant practicing of the song that i've gotten into the habit of muting that low E with my thumb
not sure if thats a helpful suggestion, or even a suggestion at all, just thought i'd give my two cents on an awesome song

i have fat fingers, so i mute the low E string with the finger that i'm fretting with. its kind of hard to explain without showing you, but just fret the A string, but have your finger higher than normal so it touches the low E. Hope that helps.the_drewster wrote:Friends, brothers, sisters and well wishers! I am so close to nailing this baby. No, really! But I have one more question.....

E:------------------------------------------------ B:--x--x--x--x-x-x--x-x-x----x--x--x--x-x-x--x-x-- G:--x--x--x--7-x-x--x-x-x----x--x--x--7-x-x--x-x-- D:--x--x--11---9-x--x-x-x----x--x--11---9-x--x-x-- A:--x--9---------10-x-x-x----x--9---------10-9-7-- E:--7---------------x-x-x----7--------------------
See the above notes in blue? How do I hit them UP and then DOWN without hitting the E string (the fat one)?? I hit the 10th with my 3rd finger, 9th with my 2nd and 7th with my 1st, so what do I mute the E with? I've no fingers left.

Dave uses his thumb ... Watch a vid of him playing. He's got his thumb on the back of the neck for the first part and then wraps his hand up around the fretboard for the second part (the ascension for lack of a better term) using his thumb to mute the low E.the_drewster wrote:Friends, brothers, sisters and well wishers! I have hands like a little girl so it's almost impossible for me to do it without a ton of practice as my fingers are not used to being in that contorted position.
