hey y'all. well im just aboptu to head up to college, but i was thinking about getting some recording equipment on my computer so i ca really hear what it all sounds like. im performing some open-mic nights and soem coffee shop shows...so i kinda wanna hear it and pick away at some things. so any suggestions would be great. can be cheap, doesnt have to be...im up for any kind. let me know, thanks.

i just threw out a number...i dont know how much all this stuff cocsts. id say 500 bucks max. i can pay any amount. so any suggestions now?

look into some small multitrackers (fostex mr-8, boss br-8, and korg)
see if you can find a musician's friends catalog, they have some good ones.

It all depends on what u want to record with. If u wanted a standalone then something like the boss would work, but it u want more features and already have, say a laptop, then u could get something like this:

http://www.m-audio.com/products/m-audio/fw410.php and a couple of condenser mics to record what comes out of the PA or u could just patch out of the soundboard to get that signal, but you would be able to do more with what u recorded and it would probably be a bit better quality (though some people will probably disagree with me on the recording through a laptop).

But if all you are wanting to do is critique yourself then a small tape multitracker would be just fine or a digital multitracker for a bit better quality. It really all just depends on how much u want to spend.

i just want a little thing around my room. plug in, lay some tracks down, then burn it onto a cd through my computer. someone suggested the fostex mr-8. what do you think about that? it that around the lines im looking for?

maybe... i have one and it can be rather bothersome if you dont have a way to mix on your computer. mixing on the fostex takes up way too much space and ends up forcing you to use very few tracks or make the song real short. if you have something like cooleditpro on your comp, its no problem

what about the boss br-8? i dont know if should go for these kinds of equipment or go for somerthing big and get it all outta the way at once. any opinions on the boss?

firedancer has one, but the boss and the fostex are essentially the same.
the problems i mentioned on the fostex can easily be taken care of for free. you can find a free mixing software somewhere on the net (or be a little less illegal and by one). and fostex has free downloadable software that allows you to take each track off individually. the truth is that the fostex is a lot more simple to use than most recording equipment. when i got mine it took me about 3 minutes to get the basic stuff down
