you play an instrument, its a trade, an art, a passed down craft, so don't take it lightly!
its a deep world thats scientific and creative and just as much expressive and thought provoking.
dont think you can pull off not knowing shit and being a virtuoso ala timmy/joe pass..etc.
you may be able to play in a band ala dave but chances are, unless your AMAzinG at either lyrics, or singing, or catchy riffs, no talented band such as that of carter, leroi, boyd are ever gonna want to play with you.--- especially band members that write songs TOGETHER not just follow the guy who doesnt know theory. The guy who doesnt know theory CANNOT write songs in a group in quick situations, or "jam" out. sorry some of you guys, but playing all your chords a little bit harder and with some muting doesnt count as jamming.
Sorry to burst some of your bubbles, im in a bad mood so thats my bluntly pessimistic post gnight.
BTW:
those of you who are self taught and do have natural talent im not knocking you! However, its a great idea to use up EVERY OUNCE of potential you have, because we all have the potential to be knowledgeable and successful.
Wrong.
I'm living proof. I know very little theory, I know the basics of keys, chords, and modes, but that's it. Yet, what's this? I can jam with just about anyone I've ever played with (unless they suck), and it usually sounds pretty damn good imho
So, sorry to burst your bubble Gumbo, but you're doing some extreme generalization and you're wrong.

definetly generalizing way too much. With the theory knowlage I have I can't jam well at all unless it's something I know. I can't be like "Oh, that's in the key of Bb? Lemme see what I can do" and play along with something that sounds good.. I just can't, and I know a decent amount of theory.
there are people in both worlds that can/can't do something that the people that either do or don't know theory can do. Such as some people can just pick up a guitar with no theory knowlage and just jam with someone. It's just due to knowlage of the instrument. But that's not to say theory isn't important, because it's the most important thing there is in music, imho.

The fact is that you can be a guitar player without knowing theory and just reading tab. You can be a piano player just by playing Bach fugues and reading everything. However, to call yourself a MUSICIAN, you need more than the mechanics and more than the emotion.
Knowing theory may not mean knowing exact progressions, figured bass and fugue form, but a knowledge of scales, keys, chord voicings and structures is required to play ANY style of music in an original way.
I think people can be wonderful players without theory. There are guys I know who dont know their asses from a V7 chord, but they can play licks like hell. These guys might be good guitarists, but I would never consider them rounded musicians.
To me, the guy who knows ZERO theory is like a painter who can only make replicas of other people's paintings. I can buy a copy of the painting just like I can simply by the original recording of the artist whose song you can jam on.
With that, sleep. Germany ahoy! Might be off for a week or so while the DSL gets installed, but I will be back asap.

ya, i did generalize a bit.
it also depends ALOT on what genre you play as well.
But ya, mahler, good guitarist without theory is very much possible,
but good "musician" is harder.

Great post!
I am adding this to my favorites for another time (when I know a bit more theory).
I just had my first guitar lesson last week, it was great!!

I think he went to Germany to go to school. I thought he was going to come back to posting once he got there but he may have gotten too busy or something.
