Help with BOWA

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Hello everyone. First time poster here. I've been checking out the boards for the past few weeks and thought I would finally chime in.

I started playing guitar about 10 years ago and the day I bought my first guitar I also bought the tab book of UTTAD. I have learned most of the songs by the books but now that I have found this site I realized that I have learned to play them the hard way. Not to say that the tabs on this site are easier, I know that they are they way Dave actually plays them live, what I mean is that by watching the videos I learned that my fingering was way off and I have learned so many shortcuts that I hadn't figured out before from the books. Does that make sense?

So now I am starting over again from the beginning with the site. The first song I am 'relearning' is BOWA, which leads me to my question... (i know, about time, right?)

I have been listening to the rutebega version of this song as mentioned in this thread. In this version, as he is playing, it sounds like he is slapping the strings to the beat as he plays. It's just a steady cadence but it really adds to the song. I haven't seen a video of him playing it this way and was wondering if anyone here can do this? Any tips for me? I've been trying to practice it this way but it's pretty tough.

Sorry for the long post but wanted to introduce myself and all....

Awesome site!

Welcome to the boards.

I just went and listened to BOWA from Rutebega, how the hell do you make that noise, it makes it sound pretty cool and deffinatley adds something when playing it solo. Id like to play it like that too, anyone got any tips.
