has dmb peaked?
alright, i know that this should be in the thoughts about stand up, but the more and more i've thought about it the more and more i feel like this deserves its own thread. with that said, do you think we will ever hear another truly great dmb cd? i know that busted stuff came out after everyday, but most of it was recorded already, not to mention refined through touring. so i'm not considering busted stuff a new cd. their last two "new" cd's(assuming we're using the definition of completly new matierial) have been alright, but nothing special. after everyday it was just like, ok, they'll stop using pop producers and get back to doing what they did so well. but then came stand up. so the question i'm still pondering, is will dmb ever put out another great studio album??
hosting the oscars is like winning the heisman trophy. no matter how you do in the ballgame, or whatever, they can't take it away from you. and even if you kill your wife and an ex-waiter, they still have a hard time taking it away from you

i think they gotta find another great producer, they used one of the best for years, to get someone to match his quality of work takes awhile. musically i dont know if theyve peaked, i think 1998 was their best year by far, but they might come back one year and just blow the roof off every venue in the u s.

i would say that 1998 wasnt their peak. I dont think they really have one peak, more like a set of hills and valleys. Think of how much got written around 1993-1995. All of UTTAD and Crash for the most part. That is a shitload of unbelievable material written in a very short time frame.
i think there will be many more holls and valleys to come.

I remember dave saying in a rolling stone interview in 03 (the one with him on the cover wearing a huge snow hat) that "we've made our best album five years ago" or something along those lines. So studio wise I would have to say the band has peaked.
If you look at the songs on uttad and crash, most of them (well, half of crash) are written by "David J. Matthews," but the majority of BTCS, the songs are written by "David J. Matthews, Stefan Lessard, Boyd Tinsley, etc..." So BTCS is the album where I think the whole band had the most say (not the producer/one member of the band), and it turned down the best. And unless DMB takes this approach to another album with enthusiasm, Ill think they peaked at 98.

Yeah but, UTTAD and Crash were amazing albums also - maybe better than BTCS. So whats your point?

My point is Dave did most of the songwriting for UTTAD and Crash. They are amazing albums, but I think the band as a whole had the most to do with BTCS, and in that respect makes it superior to Crash and UTTAD. Dave also feels BTCS is the band's best album; he stated this in the Rolling Stone article I previously mentioned. So I think DMB peaked with the release of BTCS and the 98 tours that followed it.Dale_Milligan wrote:DMBassist52 wrote:I remember dave saying in a rolling stone interview in 03 (the one with him on the cover wearing a huge snow hat) that "we've made our best album five years ago" or something along those lines. "We did that with Before These Crowded Streets, which I think is our best album. It had a lot of surprises." Quote from Dave in Rolling Stone, published Jan 22, 2004.

98 was their peak in quality and energy and guests used in live playing to date, IMO, but I think as far as albums go they still have plenty of potential.

Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
