Stupid Elixers

Unread post by djs488 » Wed May 25, 2005 2:12 pm

Been playing guitar for 5 years and never tried Elixer strings. I strum abnormally heavy and always have a problem with my strings not snapping, but actually cutting the copper wrapping and having it slide around and buzz. So I decided to shell out the $12 for elixers cuz they're supposed to "last longer". Anyway, put them on yesterday, playing some simple lick today and the g-string snaps at the bridge. Abosolutely ridiculous. I guess elixers would be good for you if you strum real soft and just like to not have to change strings once a month, but other than that, don't use them. $12 strings last one day!

um, im a very agressive strummer. string breaking while youre playing is a sign of bad technique. that doesnt mean youre a bad player, just means bad technique. i never break strings while playing. only when going in/out of alternate tunings.

elixirs are my favorite strings. :P

I love elixirs. Never played a better string IMO.

I had the EXACT same thing happen to the only set of elixirs ive ever used, and i dont even break strings except for about once every 6 months.

Yea, I've always used martin marquis, they never seem to break on me, but get worn down pretty easily. Like I said before, I have a fairly frequent problem of having the fret cut the copper off the string so it rattles around, but that might be due to bad technique also  . I'll admit that the strings did sound pretty nice when they were on there and had a nice feel, but cmon, u gotta last longer than one day. I mean, regardless of my technique, my old strings last weeks.

Martin strings are horrid IMO.

Ive always used Elixirs (Light/Mediums), they last forever tonally, and Ive never broken a string and I play pretty damn aggressive at times.

i use elixers all the time

i had the SAME problem, i broke either the D or G string 3 times in one day.

but then i switched to elixer mediums and i've only broken one string in 2 years

if you go with medium, you'll get the awesomness of elixer, and you wont break em. i stum hard too

I use elixir extra lights for gigs and have never broken a string. Perhaps you wound it up to tight or put your strings on wrong.

ive tried many packs of them, all disapointed, other strings work great with me, vincis are what i use, and they sound better, easy to play, dont ware out, the coating doesnt come off on your fingers or pick, and are a little cheaper

Elixirs break at the bridge 90% oft he time because your bridge isdirty or something got stuck there that is cutting your string...

I strum harder than most people I know because I'm not really one for finesse but I had elixer's last me about 3 weeks before breaking. And they still sounded amazing. Just too expensive. I use D'addario's because they don't sound horrid and they are so cheap.

Ever think it was just a bad string? And do you really change the whole set if only one breaks?

I completely agree, I used to play martin strings but they lost tone almost as soon as you get them out of the box:D I use Elixars now, pretty much all the time, but it's only because my music store doesn't carry D'addario EXP which are the best strings ever IMO.
