There used to be a band in Toronto that was actually quite good called Zygote.

They had a bit of everything in their music - metal, reggae, ska, blues, rock, funk (it varied from song to song)....

unfortuanately they broke up about a year and a half ago.. but they were quite entertaining and plyed a great live show.

Sea Change is phenomenal. i wish Jeff Buckley wasn't so unknown though...he's inspired so many different artists, and his voice was and still is incredible.

Hell Yes....its all about the Dispatch, Guster and OAR. OAR puts on some of the greatest live shows I've ever seen (not to mention a great CD)

Yeah, its amazing that he isn't more popular. If you haven't heard of him, go buy Grace right now, or get ahold of "Love You Should've Come Over", "Grace", "So Real", "Last Goodbye" and "Hallelujah" (his version easily surpasses Leonard Cohen's original). First time I heard those songs I was in awe of how amazing he was. Too bad he died... :( Sea Change is so depressing, but it has that slight glimmer of hope throughout the album. Such a departure from his normal stuff; possibly why I like it more. check out Ben Folds too. "Brick" was a pretty big hit in the early 90's, but his other stuff is just as good if not better.

exactly. Sea Change has a sort of Nick Drake feel to it...it's far more appealing, and i think he's really in touch of his emotions. there has to be a glimmer of hope, otherwise how would he make it through the breakup with his girlfriend?

and as for Buckley, all the songs you recommended were great. i've said it countless times, but i always get chills watching the Live in Chicago video of his performance of Hallelujah. i think he was one of the artists that really helped popularize the song, and now countless singer/songwriters are mimicking him. his cover of "Lilac Wine" is gorgeous, as is his cover of Dido's Lament, and Satisfied Mind. also, Everybody Here Wants You is a classic song.

Ben Folds is great, but i don't think he's really that unknown, nor was Beck. Beck was popular in the early 90's, i think, but sort of remained in the shadows. Ben Folds has his own fanbase. "The Luckiest" is one of my all time favorite songs, "Brick" is great, and "Song for the Dumped" is a hella fun song.

Nick Drake has timeless music. man...he sounds so contemporary, i love his music. i just hate all his open tunings...so damn hard to try to play more than 2 of his songs in a row.

I'll have to check out that Live in Chiacgo dvd, I haven't seen it. I just mentioned Ben Folds and Beck because they're both pretty big artists, but they've been under the radar the past few years after their initial one or two hits. Gotta agree with you though, Nick Drake is amazing.

Just picked up Damien Rice's "O" the other day. Could be one of the best albums of 2003. I had it on repeat in my car for at least two weeks. Check out Elliot Smith's Figure 8 too. I've been on an alt-country kick for awhile, so I've been really into Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown, some Wilco, and the Jayhawks (rainy day music is a great album).

very true. i've recently gotten in to jeff buckley, and am really digging grace. i love the eastern melodies, and so i absolutely love dream brother. i love the sitar at the beginning. i so want to learn an eastern instrument, preferably the sarod.

i also love his cover of hallelujah. i'd like to head dave cover that cover. his voice could really do it justice
