Re: Mahogany Wood
I'm guessing you want to know what it sounds like as back/sides wood, because if youre talking about mahogany tops everything changes.Ryeguy wrote:What kind of tone does mahogany wood have?
Mahogany for back and sides is fairly bright, and has a very nice midrange, it does have less bass than rosewood though. It sounds very clear and has a solid fundemental, but lacks the overtones and sustain of rosewood guitars. It isn't better or worse than rosewood just different. I tried to look for a good definition from a luthier and all I could find was this little tid-bit:
"Feedback and other audio problems that often plague guitars of rosewood are rarely encountered with mahogany-backed guitars."
Here is a good discussion on mahog as a tonewood.

I have a
Taylor 314ce limited koa - spruce top with koa back and sides
Epiphone Hummingbird - spruce top with Mahogany back and sides
Martin D-15 - Mahogany top, back and sides
the Martin with the Mahogany top gets most of my attention...
if we're talking mahoghany of the saepele nature than its a different story... and to be fair you are comparing it to a koa and an epiphoneCWMCALL wrote:I have to disagreepraisedave wrote:yeh mahog tops are bad imo but as back and sides its my fave tone wood

and always remeber on woods, the price has nothing to do with the quaility, its all about tone. rosewood is more expensivce because its rarer. so never look at price for quality.
Yeah i should have clarified what i meant. but it seems my question has been answered.. Im looking at some Blueridge guitars and their pretty nice. Two which I have been looking at: one with mahogany back and sides with sitka spruce top, and the other indian rose wood top and sides spruce top. Blueridge is a great company.. they produce high end guitars at very affordable prices. I had no idea there was Mahogany tops as well.

oh koa is fine as a backwood and sidewood, but using it for a top is like building a cars engine out of gold... sure it looks pretty and its exspesive, but it just dont performfilmdude100cms wrote:um my guitar has koa back and sides so watch it...praisedave wrote:if we're talking mahoghany of the saepele nature than its a different story... and to be fair you are comparing it to a koa and an epiphoneCWMCALL wrote:I have to disagreepraisedave wrote:yeh mahog tops are bad imo but as back and sides its my fave tone wood

well when you utter koa and epiphone in the same sentence it seems like an insult...praisedave wrote:oh koa is fine as a backwood and sidewood, but using it for a top is like building a cars engine out of gold... sure it looks pretty and its exspesive, but it just dont performfilmdude100cms wrote:um my guitar has koa back and sides so watch it...praisedave wrote:if we're talking mahoghany of the saepele nature than its a different story... and to be fair you are comparing it to a koa and an epiphoneCWMCALL wrote:I have to disagreepraisedave wrote:yeh mahog tops are bad imo but as back and sides its my fave tone wood

I agree that most of the koa topped guitars don't really perform, but every once in a while you will hear one that is absolutely amazing. This was probably one of the best acoustics I've ever played....but at $4,800(used price!!) it better be-praisedave wrote:oh koa is fine as a backwood and sidewood, but using it for a top is like building a cars engine out of gold... sure it looks pretty and its exspesive, but it just dont performfilmdude100cms wrote:um my guitar has koa back and sides so watch it...praisedave wrote:if we're talking mahoghany of the saepele nature than its a different story... and to be fair you are comparing it to a koa and an epiphoneCWMCALL wrote:I have to disagreepraisedave wrote:yeh mahog tops are bad imo but as back and sides its my fave tone wood
