thoughts on new cd
i think this album is very representative of the band.
think about how everyday was mostly matthews and ballard writing songs.
this time, the band wrote the songs and then dave came back with lyrics. and the bands influences show up much more now.
stefan is a deftones and krsone fan. i mean this is the music he listens to. why not expect more hip-hop in an predominantly african american band.
the band had fun in the studio and that is obvious by the light attitude of the album. BTCS was epic and the band wasn't trying to write another epic album.
afterall there was talk of breaking up after all the frustration of LWS, so seeeing how much they are loving writing new songs together and playing in the studio again, makes me excited.
this album is a looser feel, and i bet we can expect something deeper and focused next time.

Just because 3/5 of the band is African American doesnt mean they are hip hop musicians. Boyd plays the violin for god sake. DMB is not hip hop band therefore there attempt to sound like one on a few songs off this album makes them sound way out of place. And I wouldn't expect anything deeper or more focused next time especially since they have said they plan to continue working with Batson.grock wrote:why not expect more hip-hop in an predominantly african american band.

I like the album but I hope they don't work with Batson again. The songs written are mostly good (Except for hunger for the great light, IMO) but will only have justice done to them when played live. Batson's production was a good effort, but I think in the end is not suitable in the long term for the band.

So far I'm really digging this album (yes, I have in and d/led it tonight). It's different and sounds more like what Everyday would have been with more band collaboration. The result is much more pallatable and grows on me with each listen. I'm seriously diggin a more prominant piano in the sound that is not limited to a few catchy riffs as it was in ED.
I don't think I'd mind future work with Batson but at this point I think it would be wise for the band to keep changing up producers and keep it fresh. I would shit myself for an album produced by Daniel Lanois.

I have Trouble With You/Joyride/Mark and Carter Jam. They all sound great. Trouble With You is very jazzy and better than quite a few songs on the CD, Joyride should have been on the album, and the Mark and Carter Jam is just plain crazy, 4 minutes of Carter going nuts and Mark tearing up the piano.

So, I don't have the album yet, I assume it's on the B-sides? That's all one track? That Trouble With You/Joyride sounds pretty sweet. Damnit! I need UPS to get that thing here soon. How are the live recordings?Nitro1515 wrote:I have Trouble With You/Joyride/Mark and Carter Jam. They all sound great. Eh. It's debatable whether this album is better than Busted Stuff, despite the new producer. I feel like DMB's slipping back among all the bands who stem from them and yet have their own defined sound (i.e. Maroon 5 with similar blues roots with that r&b kick). They're losing the traits that make them a band separate from all the others out there now. They had it back in the days of Before These Crowded Streets and even with newer compilations like The Lillywhite Sessions, but it seems that, after they lost Lillywhite, they lost their edge. The time has come to lament the fall of DMB into the musical realm of mediocrity.

Let's just hope that this new experience with the new producer has made them more comfortable with different ways to make music. I think that they have the potential to explore more and express themselves in a different way without sacraficing artistic merit. Personally, I really like this CD. But for those who are hating it (most of you, for very valid reasons), let's hope that the process of creating this album has inspired a creative spark within DMB that will keep them in love with what they do. What could be really bad, is DMB settling into their comfortable little corner and creating music in a way that becomes boring to them, just because that's what they're used to and what the fans are used to. Yeah, this album has it's downpoints, but I see some musical growth within. The jams are lacking and there is a lack of melody (TrippingBilly wrote:Eh. I'm on my 4th or 5th time through the album since I got a hold of it last night. While I will still wait to pass final judgement, I do hear more of the signature DMB sound in this album then I did on Everyday though it is mired in what some might call "poopy" overtones.
I'm digging on American Baby with every pass. I haven't placed it yet but something about this song just reminds of The Police - its got the funky beat. The American Baby Intro gives me chills...good chills...

Though it is the single, and I try to shy away from singles because they become overplayed and too popular, I must admit that I agree: I, too, have fallen for American Baby.KevinGTArch wrote:I'm on my 4th or 5th time through the album since I got a hold of it last night. It's three separate tracks. Joy Ride, Trouble With You, Mark and Carter Jam.whip3512 wrote:So, I don't have the album yet, I assume it's on the B-sides? That's all one track?
