Alright here we goGSRLessard14 wrote:So let's hear some of your song by song reviews.
Dreamgirl - Very good song. The breakdown and the ending makes it with Roi's clarinet work and then the sax and strings ending is pretty sweet. Lyrics are definitely cheesy at times, but I think Dave pulls it off.
Stand Up - Another good one. Eventhough they say Stand Up a million times it works. Roi is all over this one. The breakdown is awesome, kinda like Kit Kat Jam. Lots of potential for LeRoi to really tear up the ending live.
Intro - I thought this was going to be better after hearing the clip. When it picks up for those 50 seconds its terrific, but they should have elaborated on it. It just kinda ends up going nowhere.
AB - Been discussed to death.
Smooth Rider - Worst track on the album. Carter does absolutely nothing , the lyrics are boring which is fitting because so is the music.
Old Dirt Hill - I actually like this song. Has a summer feel to it. Boyds plucking is perfect, and I actually like Carter singing a little lead on this one. The bridge at the 3 minute mark is probably my favorite part of the song.
Everybody Wake Up - Not a big fan of this one. The intro sounds like a rip off of the Kronos Quartets The Stone Intro on BTCS. Then when the rest of the band kicks in, the song sounds too upbeat to fit that depressing intro. Lyrics are weak, and they could have done a lot more on the jam at the end. I just don't like the electric feel to this song.
Out Of My Hands - Great track. Pure emotion no production effects needed on this one. Lyrics are excellent, the piano work is perfect. Just a solid track.
Hello Again - Good job sucking the life out of this song. I don't really like the effect they have on Dave's voice, and the whole feel to it is just "eh". And to make matters worse they cut it off at the 3:52 mark taking away what makes DMB so great, their soloing.
Lousiana Bayou - Good tune over all. Lyrics can get kinda repetitive in the verse, but I do like the whole "its a shame to lose your way as a child/running wild," theme of the song. Boyd lays down a solid jam at the end. And we know this one is good live from Jazzfest the other night.
Stolen Away On 55th & 3rd - Can you say disappointment? From the clip that I heard I thought this would easily be my favorite song. Too bad it just ends up going nowhere, is there even a chorus on this track? Excellent sax work by Roi is wasted, I love what he is doing in the background but Dave's lyrics are pretty much on repeat.
You Might Die Trying - Excellent song. It follows the classic DMB formula of Dave laying down a cool opening riff, the rest of the band jumps in and then Roi and Boyd tear it up at the end. The lyrics are solid as well. A lot of people have a problem with Carters drum effect but I think it works within the context of the song.
Steady As We Go - I thought this song was going to be a hell of a lot better. From what people were saying from the listening parties it had classic written all over it. Instead, the lyrics are sappy and it just doesn't do anything for me even when the whole band jumps in at the end.
Hunger For The Great Light - Overall decent. Sounds like a Beatles song. I like the middle of the song when it gets rockin with Stefan on the electric. Lyrics are a bit dirty but that never really bothered me. The string reprise at the end is pretty cool.
I guess overall this album is alright. Its better than Everyday. At first listen I think I thought it was better than what it actually is. There is no real substance to some these songs, most just kinda go nowhere. And Dave needs to work on his lyrics instead of just singing whatever comes to his mind like he said in the first video clip off the album site. I remember in the video from the studio on BTCS Dave was in NYC looking out the window on a rainy night writing lyrics to Pig and Crush. This time around he took a line that his producer said "Stand Up" and wrote a whole song around it, kinda lame. I'm just a little disappointed by the whole thing, I really thought they were going to make something special, but it does not seem to be the case. Some tracks I really enjoy, but others I just want to skip over which I never wanted to do before with the exception of Everyday. My saving grace is that they release more of the b-sides sometime in the future because I loved what I heard at the end of clips 3 and 4 on the album site.

I was wondering the same thing. It seems like some who had negative expectations are surprised and happy and those with high expectations are let down a little.GSRLessard14 wrote:so is everybody lying in the "listen to all of stand up" thread?

I siad I wouldn't listen to it but I had some boring database work to do so I thought I would stream the album. So far my thoughts are not good. I recall liking approximately 4 songs, not sure of the names becuase I wasn't looking at my laptop screen.
Maybe some more listening will help me like it more.

The more I listen to most albums the more I like them. This is again the case with this album, but I liked most of the songs I heard the first time a lot, so it may not grow on you as much as it did me.jellyfish wrote:I siad I wouldn't listen to it but I had some boring database work to do so I thought I would stream the album. I think thats a fair assessment. Thats why I tried to stay not too excited and not real down on any of the clips I heard or in any of my expectations.whip3512 wrote:I was wondering the same thing. I agree that carter isnt a dominant, mad man drummer on this album and daves lyrics arent always what were used to. But I think they focused a lot on the music and it all grooves well, its a good album. Not their best, not their worst, but Im currently really enjoying it.
You Might Die Trying is very bad ass, so it Louisana Bayou, I was kind of disappointed with Smooth Rider because I thought it was gonna be great and its just ok. Overall its a good album and I see it getting a lot of play in the iPod for weeks to come.

I remember NOT liking Smooth Rider. I just don't understand why that made the album. Weren't 23 songs made during these sessions?, and Smooth rider makes the cut? Makes me think the other songs not on the album weren't so good.jsgksu wrote:I think thats a fair assessment. This album on the whole has me let down. The lyrics are just SO god damn bad at times. There are some great lyrics (see the pig dressed in his finest fine/as the believers stand behind him and smile/as the day lights up with fire/etc etc) but THIs is just not DMB.
"I was feeling like a creep, as I watched you asleep, face down in the grass, in the park, in the middle of a hot afternoon. Your top was untied, and I thought how nice, it would be to follow the sweat down your spine."
What the fuck?
What happened to stuff like the stone, raven, ynk, spoon, pig, dreaming tree?
batson didn't push them to write good stuff. where as lillywhite did. lillywhite was a pusher, batson just said 'oh that sounds good lets see what other random riffs we can fit together to make a song out of it'
try to find me a lyric on BTCS, Crash, LWS or UTTAD which makes you shake your head.
i'm not saying the band needed to re-record btcs, but come on. you can't tell me that they could have gone in this new direction without good lyrics. where are the great sax riffs, drum fills, etc? YOU HAVE CARTER BEAUFORD IN THE BAND AND YOU ARE USING A DRUM MACHINE. Good LORD! Where are the catchy basslines? i haven't been blown away by stefan once on this album, like i have been on other albums. there is nothing on this album that makes me want to pick up my bass and play.
there are some good things though. the musical aspect of Dream Girl is awesome, and I see myself using it to get laid in the near future. Louisiana Bayou is pretty good overall, out of my hands is nice, and Hunger is almost halloween-like.
this band really has the potential to do better. why couldn't they just release an album like
1. Hello Again w/ drum solo and dave solo intro
2. Monkey Man
3. Light Lift Me Up
4. Crazy/Easy (Finished)
5. Dressed In Black
6. Sugar Will
7. Sweet Up And Down
8. Good Good Time
9. Joy Ride
10. JTR
11. Out Of My Hands ->
12. Blue Water
They have ALL THOSE SONGS in their catalog. Would have been simply amazing. but we get synth drum beats and a mediocre at best lyrical performance.
it had to be said.

I totally agree with this point. The one thing I got mad about from those studio clips was Dave talking about how this wasn't work and it came so easy. I just kept thinking to myself, you guys are all multi million dollar musicians god forbid you do some hard work for a month or two in the studio every 3 or 4 years. And your right about Batson, Lillywhite actually pushed the band towards perfection. He made Dave sing Sweet Up and Down over 90 times during the LWS just to make sure he got the perfect performance. Daves voice on this cd seems like he just rolled out of bed and started singing to get it over and done with.i like tictacs wrote: batson didn't push them to write good stuff. where as lillywhite did. lillywhite was a pusher, batson just said 'oh that sounds good lets see what other random riffs we can fit together to make a song out of it'

Isn't there an interview or article floating around where Dave said he was not in total agreement with some of the songs that made the cut? I think I remember reading that he thought some of the best songs they wrote didn't make the cut. Oh well, I guess. At least DMB isn't like Pink Floyd about these kinds of things and can make decisions as a group.jellyfish wrote:I remember NOT liking Smooth Rider. I just don't understand why that made the album. Yeah he did say that. He started out by saying that he loved all the songs they made, then he said there were some songs that he absolutely loved that didnt make the cut and some songs that he loved a little less did make it.whip3512 wrote:Isn't there an interview or article floating around where Dave said he was not in total agreement with some of the songs that made the cut?
