How to get a clean voice recording?

Like the subject says, how do you guys go about getting relatively clean voice recordings? I know the sound of me exhaling is not ear-shatteringly loud, but you'd never guess from some of the .wav files I've been making. Is it a function of the mic or it's position or something else entirely?

don't get too close to the mic...i try to stay about 6 inches away from the mic itself, and then go through and if the track is too soft, i amplify it/raise the volume and i put on some light hiss reduction and it sounds all right.

Hmm. I find that I almost have to eat the mic to get a descent signal, but maybe that's why my vocal tracks sound so bassy. I'll have to try keeping back from the mic a bit and then amplifying it...

yeah...amplifying it will increase the hiss, unless you reduce the hiss before you amplify it, or you can just do it afterwards. but it might just be your mic too...not sure.

Yeah maybe it is the mic. It's a pretty cheesy Radio Shack one:

get a pop filter, you can get close to the mic without worrying about hard "p's" and "t's"
