Most Intense Song to Drum
now, i don't play the drums, but i play the air drums a lot. good exercise and a -great- stress reliever. and i have a rule that if i can't even air drum a song, with no drumsticks in my hands, then damn but that's some crazy drumming.
despite playing the guitar, i've always felt that the drums really drive a band, and i really hate boring drummers. i mean, just think of what the dave matthews band would be without carter. or imagine what pink floyd could have been if they had had a really good drummer!
so anyways, what's your take on the most intense, most unrelenting song to try to drum? excluding songs with drum solos, cause that's too obvious an answer. just songs where the drums really truly lead the music and make the song X times better in the process.
for my pick, i'm going with Jethro Tull - Cold Wind to Valhalla. you drumming guys should really check this one out and try to learn it. and if you can, then seriously, instead of posting on here, you should be earning hundreds of dollars a day doing studio work with famous musicians.

Never heard that song before Im trying to download it
Songs for me, coming as a drummer, that are centered by the drums are:
Save Me - Tea Party (Guitar is played with a violin bow, but the drums underlying the song is innovative complex and just plain fierce)
Drive In, Drive Out - Carter wails, what can I say
Rosanna - Toto (the most "complex simple beat" in my words, great beat backing up the song)
Tom Sawyer - Rush (probably one of my favorite drum songs, great to play, amazing driving fills)
Sunday Morning - No Doubt (Adrian Young is a very underrated drummer, some great simple ideas that lift this song up IMO)
First To Giveth - Queens of the Stone Age (Dave Grohl lays out a fantastic beat during the chorus using the toms with both hands while keeping the crash on 1/4 notes)
Jeery Was a Racecar Driver - Primus (double kicks really pound this song, great other beats, not too complex though)
50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon (Steve Gadd creates a soft but great beat for the song)
Story of 100 aisles - Our Lady Peace (Jeremy Taggert was on my favorite drummers back in OLP's prime, pounds them in this tune, with great accents during the quieter verses)
Stalemate - Limp Bizkit (great intro then beat layed by John Otto, does it for me in this song, another underrated drummer who knows his shit)
Brian Wilson - Barenaked Ladies (actually the bongos that I love in this tune)
Police (Stewart Copeland), Blink-182 (Travis Barker), Alien Ant Farm (Mike Cosgrove), and early Limp Bizkit have some consistantly great drumming which makes some of the songs what they are IMO
Sorry I went off on this post....great thread

sweet... someone else who knows of the tea party. yeah, save me's a great tune, in fact that entire album is great, and is a big inspiring factor to my guitar playing - especially my diversions into alternate tunings. have you heard their song Mantra? it's off of the interzone mantras, and has similar drumming.carter29 wrote:Never heard that song before Im trying to download it

drive in, drive out... but of course

i love rush and that's one of my favourites as well, i still need to learn that one... especially the keyboard part that's in 7. i've always liked Peart's solo, it's much more... musical than most.
dave grohl's drumming on that QOTSA album really impressed me because i'm so NOT a fan of his drumming in nirvana. i mean, seriously, there is a huge difference between PLAYING the drums and HITTING the drums. i'm only really familiar with their radio songs off that album - great drumming in no one knows as well.
primus was great when herb was in the band, and kind of went downhill after he left, in my opinion. frizzle fry was always one of my favourite primus drum tunes. that, and is it luck?
i really dug our lady peace's first two albums, not so much their later work. taggart seemed to mellow out a bit too much after that. story of 100 aisles is also one of my favourites, wicked guitar riff too.
haven't heard those other songs, i'll look in to them.

Totally agree with these points.
Yeah, I find the best drum songs arent always right in fromnt of you, you have to look deep because they typically aren't radio songs.
Everlong (Foo Fighters) as well as lots of Taylor Hawkins drumming is solid rock drumming with great energy.
Mudvayne and Slipknot's drummers have crazy skill too. I am not a huge fan of the death metal but listen closely to hear some great licks and timing.
Are you planning on starting to play the drums?

don't know about slipknot (call me superficial... but i saw a picture of them once) but yeah mudvayne is the perfect example of a band where i can really dig the rhythm section, but the singer and lead guitarist just piss me off.carter29 wrote: Totally agree with these points.

i'm not really planning on starting the drums, i've played them before since my brother drums and whenever i get the urge (not really that often) i can do so. i'm pretty content with my set of airdrums. they're ludwigs!

and of course, danny carey is teh r0x0r
pearl jam's second drummer too. why did stone ever fire him? idioth... check out W.M.A. off of VS. now there is some serious endurance drumming.

Anything Art Blakey. That guy is fucking amazing. Im really goping back thourhm my albums of his and he just makes everyone else just go to waste. Him and Tony Williams. But when I play these tunes...I got to go all out. If you've ever heard these guys, they just rip through. Art just beats the crap out of his set. I have to work harder when I play these tunes then for any tune named. These two guys are just amazing. IMO, better then any of the drummer previously mentioned. Just amazing.
