Suggestion Needed

I'm in the midst of saving up for either a Martin HD-28V or a Taylor 914C. Yes, I realize that they're both "Dave" guitars, but in all honesty, I've never played a guitar I like better than either of them. The two most important factors I look for, sound and the feel of the neck, are unlike anything I've ever played in those two.

Since I can't decide, I was wondering if anyone had a reccomendation, based on technical specs or whatever other argument you could make.

Secondly, while I'm saving, I need a new guitar, anyway. I've got it down to a Martin DX1 or a Washburn D10. Since I'm somewhat leaning towards the HD-28V over the 914, I figured it might be best to spend the extra money and get the DX1. The D10 is $400 CAD and the DX1 is $800 CAD, but I can get it for $60/month over 18 months, which should give me the time to save up.

Once again, if anyone has a suggestion as to which one I should get, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Also, if anyone knows of a cheaper, but comparable Martin (or Taylor, for that matter) model that I've overlooked, let me know.

I would actually go with the D10. I hear that it's a great guitar for its price, although I've never heard it myself.

And the HD-28V is the best guitar I've ever played in my life.

Thanks for your opinion. And I'm certainly glad to hear someone backing up the HD-28V.

By the way, I forgot to ask, what's the story on buying from eBay? I'm a big eBay user, but I've never made a "big ticket" buy like a guitar.

i vote hd-28v over 914. i dont like low end martin's or taylors, but the d10 seems so cheap its all on you brotha.

dont buy a solid wood acoustic on ebay. even if you play one because they are made from wood, which varies, one oof the same model may very well sound quite different.

the last statement in your first post makes me cringe....

I really can't decide, according the guy I was talking to at the shop, the DX1 is excellent. I didn't have time to pick it up and give it a test, though, I was in a hurry.

In case you haven't noticed, I'm a name-brand guy (lol), so what's so bad about the low-end Martin and Taylors? I thought it was quality all down the line? After all, that's what I'd expect from a hand-crafted manufacturer.

OOOOHHHH another stab in the heart!!!

the brand name should have nothing to do with the guitar you select. nothing at all.

they do have quality, but all guitar brands have quality. the problem with low end martin is that they just use the same deigns as their high ends and replace the wood with laminate. there are better designs for laminate guitars. other companies have explored and found them. companies like alvarez, takamine, and michael kelly.

taylor tried... but there low ends, despite being designed differently, dont sound good either imo.

do what you like though man, its all opinion!

Alright, will do. I'll have to go into the shop again tomorrow and try a few out.

I was looking at some Taks, actually. What's good Takamine model for $300-400 USD. Yes, I'm Canadian (and damn proud of it

), but for convenience sake for everyone else, I'll keep the prices in US.

Dude, Alvarez RF8, my gf bought one shipped for $180.00 and it sounds good. You wouldnt believe it was less than $200.00 If you have a little extra to spend get a full sized dreadnought Alvarez. For the money, youre going to get a better guitar than a very low end Martin or Taylor. Go play some and see for yourself.

Well, the Martin and Taylor that you mentioned are shaped differently. Some people like the auditorium style of the Taylor x14 models, but I am a tradition dread guy myself.

I would seriously look at the 700 series of Taylor. It is basically the same as the 900 series but with less ornate decorations and a SHITLOAD cheaper.

Also, the 400, and 500 series limiteds are cool because they use different woods and sometimes have a unique sound that you would like over the standard woods.

I am of the personal opinion that after a certain point of money, a guitar is a guitar is a guitar. If you LVOE the 914, then fine, but I almost promise you that the 714CE will provide you with equal enjoyment for a SUBSTANTIAL amount less.

The HD-28V is the best guitar I've ever played as well. I wouldn't even think about a Taylor if that was in my price range.

As to your cheap guitar, you just have to decide if you're a Martin man. The DX1 has the martin tone, that's for sure. I personally think that guitar is awesome for the price, but I love Martin tone. Never played the Washburn to be fair.

The 714 actually sounds better because of the cedar top.

I'd recommend the HD-28V over any taylor but i'd also recommend trying HD-35 before you make your decision.
