My review of the waterville listening party, a week later

Unread post by i like tictacs » Sat Apr 09, 2005 11:49 am

FWIW:

I went to the Waterville party last friday. I had to fly out to Copper, CO to go to a snowboard contest the day after so I couldn't post anything. What I heard was very interesting. There was some very groovy stuff, and lots of funky stuff. A totally new direction for the band. Some songs are going to take time to grow on me I think, or not grow at all. Old Dirt Hill and Dream Girl I thought were great. I didn't know the titles of most of them though. A very diffferent album. Alot of weird segues between tracks. The only song from last summer on it was Hello Again. Which kind of irks me.

thanks for the review  do you remember anything else about the album like can you compare it to any previous album? and just how funky are these songs, are they a big departure from the traditional DMB sound?

Nice, was the contest at copper mountain? I've been there before, pretty cool place.

It was a great mountain, but I must say the contest was lackluster. All of their park workers went on strike in march after the gravity games because they didn't get a raise. So it was all volunteer. Bleck. Fun though. Nice weather.

Anyway.

Oh right, the album.

There is some VERY different stuff, I kept having to remind myself it was DMB. Like, carter is ridiculous on the album, and there is alot of empty space in some of the songs which he fills very very well. There are also a few songs that are very DMB-esque and even some nice new riffs. Old Dirt Hill is not the old dirt hill that was in clip 4, that G scale riff. That's not it. It's a very mellow song. Dream Girl I loved. I can't really remember much. But it is definatly a large departure from DMB we know.

Sounds cool, only good can come from featuring Carter. So its definitely not another Everyday then, which makes me very happy.

I'm glad they're trying to do something different for the sake of artistic endevour. What's not cool is when a band does something different just to do it and it turns out to be shit. I've got an open mind, I can't wait to hear this stuff.
