Listen up all recording peoples...
I have been thinking alot about the recording contests on dmbtabs... the few that have succeeded, and the many that have failed. I have an idea and its pretty complicated, but heres what im thinkin:
the few contests that have succeeded seem to have one thing in common: there is something to be won. theres a prize. it seems that without one few people can get motivated to do their recordings and get them in on time. so i think over the next year or so, we should put together a "Best of DMBtabs" CD. We should do a contest every month until we have enough tracks and the reward for winning the contest is getting your track on the CD. We can have cover contests, original contests, jamming/improv contests, a contest where you take a poem and add instrumentals to it... ive got tons of contest ideas. Then we could use musiciansfriend or a similar company to make some of these CD's and the DMBtabs staff could sell them online or in person to help give some money to the site for development. we've got alot of talent on this website and I think that we could sell quite a few CD's. I know i would buy one even though i could get all the tracks for free online. Plus, all the contest winners would have their music spread around. It could be a very cool thing. We would have to limit how many times one person could win, or it would become the "Ben Pezzner Album". Then on the inside of the CD we could have all the info and websites for the artists on each track. I know, personally, if i told my family and friends that i had a track on a CD that they could buy online with some other great music on it, that just people i know would buy a decent amount of them. Im sure this is the same for almost everybody here. The key is we would have to make it very professional. We could even have a cover art design contest. There are almost limited amounts of possibilities here.
Obviously, this requires quite a bit of work and dedication on the part of the staff, and if they don't think its a good idea then its done. But i think its got alot of potential. Gimme some feedback guys!

It's a good idea, but I'm pretty sure there'd be some legal hurdles to selling dmb songs, even if they are covers. They're still copyrighted songs...making money off of them probably wouldn't be the smartest idea, no matter what the money is going to.
The idea of making a free compilation would still work, but someone would have to provide bandwidth.

giving it away wouldnt really warrant paying to have them made, and it wouldnt be quite as cool. but its still an option.

I think giving them away would be cooler. Why doesn't someone just set up a torrent with the CD so everyone can DL it? That seems like a more logical idea to me.praisedave wrote:are hurdles just paperwork or are there fees or what? brock seems like he would know... *turns on brock signal*mbgreen wrote:It's a good idea, but I'm pretty sure there'd be some legal hurdles to selling dmb songs, even if they are covers. I have no problem handling all onsite organization. ill set up all the contests and arrange all the poles and shit.DRMusic wrote:i like this idea, but it does seem that organizing it could be time consuming
Brock: okay, well lets assume we go all originals then: does somebody (you or kanter) have the setup to sell the cd's via paypal or whatever? i think this could be a great way to make teh site money. (ive felt sort of leechish because i spend so much time on this site and get som much from it. i feel the need to contribute)

Well, we do have some things coming down the pipe this summer that should result in some income to help cover a little bit of the costs. I'm a bit leery of DMBTabs.com selling a CD of originals, as it could lead to some copyright issues (most likely not, but if someone on the CD were to become disgruntled, they could sue us). Not saying no, just saying it'll definitely require quite a bit of thought (and legal contracts, so no minors).
well pittman's a lawyer (in school atleast) so if hes still alive he could help us there (i havent seen him in months).bbatsell wrote:Well, we do have some things coming down the pipe this summer that should result in some income to help cover a little bit of the costs. I understand the worry of lawsuit; but could they really sue us for more than 1/(track number) of our profits? Plus, i think that most people that bother to record and compete on a regular basis are regulars of the site and would never dream of suing us. I know its still a pretty big issue, but I, being a minor, would have no problem getting my parents to sign for me. But is it possible to handle those documents via the internet? is it legally binding if the signature is scanned in? these are all hurdles to cross, but if this does pan out, you would have atleast a year to iron out the details (assuming you want 12 tracks). in each contest thread we could put a note saying that winners may be required to sign the rights to the song away. If we think theres a possibility of it happening we should try and have the first contest in May i think. Thanks for workin with me here brock.
edit: even if it doesnt pan out in 12 months, we'll have a cd to give away.

Most people with originals worth listening to already have a cd available. Sorry, but most of this board's originals really suck or they are just ok. Not something I'd pay for.
And almost nobody is going to take the time to sign something and scan it in, and it's just more trouble than it's worth.
Stick with the official covers contest, and torrent/host or whatever via volunteers. You're making this much too complicated for it to work. It has to be simple.
