If you're using a computer mic than by all means ditch it. There are plenty of mics under $100 that are really decent. Even if you're getting a Acoustic/electric a mic is still a good idea. You can get some really nice recordings by blending the signal from the pickup and the mic. Pickup technology these days is still too "piezo" imo. A mic will make it sound a lot better either way.
The standard starting point for mic placement is about a foot away pointed at the 14th fret. Mics are directional so how you place them is very important.
What are you recording into? A computer a hard disk recorder? Do you have some sort of preamp that has xlr hookups?

The best way to mic a guitar is to listen to it. Have some-one play the guitar and put your hear up to it, and find the area that sounds the best. A mic is a very simple thing...all you do is mic the best area of the guitar. You dont want to break XLR to mini 1/8. Try and get an interface...and the quality will be there. XLR has two conductors because they cut on noise and has a stronger signal. Why buy a 100 dollar mic if it will only sound like a 60 mic????

it defeats teh purpose of having a good mic
it will probably sound better than a computer mic, but as mwr said, you really need a preamp to get decent sound
i think behringer makes a 2 channel mixer for like 40 bucks.. i'd go for that
