This is why Dave is famous. He's one of the better rhythm players out there and he uses interesting chord voicings and his timing is amazing.
After Dave became "popular" you saw all sorts of other singer/songwriters emulating his style, that's what happens in popular music a lot, emulation.
Did he make these chords up, no - do most guitarists associate the percussive sound those chords can generate in combination with some sick strumming with Dave Matthews - YES! This is why Dave makes millions and I play for free whiskey.

thanks for all your answers I just feel bad about using these chords when I write my own stuff cause I don't want to be like Dave even though he is my main influence. I want to be really creative but I have trouble making up such cool chords like he does but then again I've only been playing since thanksgiving
yeah i also kinda feel bad about using them but i think just as long as you dont only use them in a song. like i have a song using a D/F# chord and i like dave style G chord to go with it like 32X4 cuz i like that muted string sound so the chords dont sound so clean.
For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again

exactly why i never use them like him. like some people use them like he does it grey street. thats just completely unoriginal to me. i'll use them where i see fit, and not overcrowd the song with them. just a personal thing i guess. i don't want to try to be dave.Grandpagotgame wrote:thanks for all your answers I just feel bad about using these chords when I write my own stuff cause I don't want to be like Dave even though he is my main influence. I was waiting for someone to point that out. These supposedly "unique" Dave chords are just stripped down versions of vanilla chords. It's the muting and rhythm that give Dave his signature style.fatjack wrote:you can't "invent" chordsGrandpagotgame wrote:Well I was just wondering if it was Dave who invented those chords, or have other artists used them before him? He also might have come up with some funky chords by transcribing some piano music to the guitar.
