How is it supposed to sound? Is it supposed to sound like "chica chica"? Cant you just do that by using your fretting hand? Or am I missing the whole point of palm muting?
when you palm mute you can still hear the notes or chords you are playing, they just sound a bit muffled, without as much sustain...

yeah thats what i thought palm muting is. when i played with a baggie sweatshirt that would lightly touch the strings, i thought that was palm muting.

He palm mutes Dodo too. It's the only way to make it sound good. A lot of stuff he plays sounds great with a little palm muting.

He palm mutes a lot more than most people would think. Two Step is palm muted a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if he palm muted Dreams of Our Fathers too.

He does. At least the first half of the verse.

i dont think he palm mutes too much, i think that maybe he damps the strings more than he palm mutes.. i think thats what you are mistaken for

i cant every play a hard song with palm muting, it seems like it restricts my strumming hand too much

It's an art for sure.

I can strum and mute but it doesn't sound that good. It takes a lot of practice to get the right amount of pressure so that the strings are muted but not totally damped.

Also, when you palm mute you're not taking big, sweeping strums like you normally would. They are more compact because of the constant contact the side of your hand has with the strings.

Just trying strumming G, A, and D (or any three chords) and palm mute those chords rather than trying to palm mute one of Dave's songs. Less frustration in my experience :)
