Playing with a Drummer
Playing with a Drummer
As a bassist, i know i'm supposed to lock into the drums and all that. But i have no idea what that means. Well, i have an idea, but like, are there some basic things to remember? How do the different drums, snare, bass, etc, interact with the bass or when should what interact with what? The reason i ask is that my friend who plays guitar might have a drummer (that happens to like dmb) that might want to jam with us sometime, and i just don't wanna be completely clueless. Any tips?
Andrew
well i'm not an expert in this stuff.. but from what i know, usually the bass follows the bass drum. so whenever the bass drum is played the bass MUST play a note. however the bass is free to play anything else at other times.. i guess the bass and bass drum must go together... other than that, snare high hat toms.. i dunno...

ok i play with a pretty experienced and talent drummer in our band and i have been playing with him since i started, so i consider myself lucky that hes been there to keep me rollin all the time. anyway....what i would do is just start playin somethin simple, a nice groove, and let the drummer come in. from there, you can tell what kind of stuff hes doin, how you fit in. hes a drummer, if hes any good, hell fit to you. after youve played a bit, you can just get a feel of how to fit with him.
a lot of times, youll be right in pace with the drummer and the snare will be the 1 and 3...you know...ONE and two and THREE and four and ONE and two and THREE and four(caps for the emphasized beats).
if hes playing a lot of syncopation tho, like carter, youll find you have be paying attention or else you might be caught off guard and change your rythm with him and it will set everything off-beat. so be careful about that.
from your work on the boards, i would consider you quite a good bassist and thus, i dont think youll have any trouble playing with this guy. good luck...and just remember...groove, youll feel it

As a drummer I would say low points in the bass line can cordinate with the bass drum, high notes with snare and hihg-hat...possibly. Listen to "Under the Bridge" by RHCP...notice the corrdination between the bass drum and bass notes, with rim shots on 2/4.
Actually there was a great video of Flea and Chad Smith which was all about bass and drums playing together.

ok i re-read my post and i think i kinda may have strayed from helpin you out much. heres a quick whatever you want to call it
from what i know, youre a good bassist. therefore, i dont think you will have a problem playing with this drummer. there is no "rule" as to what has to interact when. if you try to pay attention to that, youll have a hard time making a groove. it wont take long for the two of you to be able to play together without even thinkin about it, especially since youre both good musicians, from what i know.
get to know him tho, i already knew my drummer for 9 years and am basically best friends with him, so that may have helped.
you will feel it

good example would be in ants marching live when he gets the double kicks going

My favorite example of that is travis barker with boxcar racer in a song called elevator, starts off with 1/3 then changes it to 2/4 and plays the same beat, gives the song a new feel

Anything can be anywhere. But when you are talking about basic grooves, 2 adn 4 are you snare down beats. And Carter29, what part are you talking about with the double-kcik? Is it the intro or throughout the song?i am sam2 wrote:yeah my bad. that was just supposed to be an example and i messed it up. just out of curiosity tho, cant the snare be on 1 and 3?Beauford33 wrote: its 2 and 4 retard
